I think I’m speechless…
Not sure they can do this any justice and no I don’t think I’ll add “Larry” to facebook. LOL
Keep in mind they don’t make these movies for horse people. They could use a bay arab mare for the part and the general public would not notice a thing.
Wow! What a disappointing choice…I guess maybe they wanted an inexpensive horse to reduce liability? The official Secretariat website is still accepting submissions until next Monday, I wonder why they jumped the gun and chose this one?
you know, I think Practical Horseman posted on Facebook that they were looking for “extras” for the movie… I think.
Bismark Tribune 8-26-09 - “North Dakota horse chosen for film”
Larry was born in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Benson said. [Heather Benson] bought him in January.
Benson says photos of Larry as a teen show him as an awkward, gawky-looking horse, with little hint of movie-star looks.
But, he’s filled out since.
Secretariat was a big, muscular horse, at 16.2 hands high and 1,200 pounds. A hand is a standard unit of measurement that equals 4 inches and often is used to describe the height of horses.
Larry is also 16.2 hands high, though his penchant for the feedbag puts him at 1,300 pounds, Benson said.
“He’s a small-town country boy,” Benson said. “He knows how to train hard and eat well. He would eat everything in this barn, given the chance.”
A natural Diva?
And when it’s time to clean up, crank up the hot-water heater, Larry won’t go for a cold shower.
“He won’t stand for it,” Benson said.
Another 4 or so horses are either still be picked and/or announced as selected. Plus as mentioned there is going to be a tough decision to make with Sham.
Hopefully they won’t pick an 18-hand Saddlebred for that
A horse that doesn’t appear to have been chosen but certainly is getting media pressure behind him:
Sun-Sentinel 8-27-09: “Freedom’s Flight” from From slaughter to screen?
I am rooting for Freedom Flight… how great would that be to have a horse formerly headed for demise to star in a Hollywood film?
I also have a great-great grandson… He also has the 3 high whites (2 in rear and one in front) and blaze. Amazing how Secretariat stamped his get … even 2-3 generations out …
JER, not exactly disagreeing with you, but neither of us have seen the pitch. (And, btw, you’re not the only one with connections.
) The story is allegedly more about Penny and less about the horse; not sure whether that’s good or bad.
Plenty of awful movies get made every year; lord knows I’ve seen a lot of them lately thanks to Netflix. And we have to keep in mind that this movie will not be marketed to the itty-bitty-teeny-tiny percentage of people who would know a bay from a chestnut, a Thoroughbred from a Morgan or a stallion from a gelding. It’s not getting made for “us.” It’s getting made for the far greater numbers of “them.”
Oh wow a North Dakota farm boy is going to play Secretariat?
Cyclone Larry?
Who is playing Sham? And Third Martini?

Third Martini? While I understand that Onion was sired by him I really don’t see any move getting that detailed
It’s a bit like wondering who will be cast as the car salesman who worked the Sunday afternoon in a August that Penny stopped by and ask for directions when lost in Saratoga. It isn’t going to be in the movie

Not sure what you’re getting at here. I don’t claim to have ‘connections’ and I don’t claim to be the ‘only one’ with ‘connections.’ I’ve been a working screenwriter/producer for a long time and have worked on numerous adaptations and history-based projects. I’m simply posting from that perspective and level of experience. It’s no different from an attorney posting about a legal issue or a banker posting about finance.
Pitches are, IME, heard and not ‘seen.’ A writer/producer might turn in an outline or treatment but the pitch is an oral presentation.
My comment about pitching the Secretariat story was simply what I said: that I’d have a hard time coming up with a workable, interesting angle on that one. Not every good story is a movie.
JER, I’m not gonna play “mine are bigger than yours.” I know how pitches are made, I know how the game is done, and I know how movies get into theaters. But I just knew it was gonna turn into a pi$$ing match for mentioning it.
My point was, you are not the only one who knows this stuff. <<shrug>>
If everyone had the same tastes in movies or knew what would be a sure-fire hit, the formula would be far, far simpler than it is.
Visions differ. If this one isn’t your cuppa, so be it. Doesn’t mean it’s not someone else’s, whose vision and methods are different from yours.

Wow. I thought your previous post was a little too junior-high but this is ridiculous.

Is this why you seem to have a problem with me – because I said I didn’t see the Secretariat story as a good basis for a movie?
I was expressing my opinion.
Fantastic video of Secretariat’s final race- great comments, great clothes, and goosebumpy footage of Secretariat himself:
Cool, JER!! You made me decades younger! You rock!!
Seriously, my point, and my only one, was that you have your opinion of what might make a good movie. I don’t know if this one will or not. You seem to think it won’t, I’m willing to give it a shot. If it fails, hey, you’re right and I’m wrong, and neither of our names are attached to it. <<Shrug>>
If I misread your intentions behind your original posts (because they really did come across as snarky), then I apologize. SMRT people read things differently and often disagree. Tis what makes the world go round.
Have a nice life, peace out.
Ok that was twenty minutes of footage and I had goosebumps and we didn’t even cover the triple crown - how could this not be a contender for a good movie - from someone who had Secretariats poster in her dorm room

DLee, if you do go, bring some extra photos of yourself on a horse or on the ground handling a horse.
You might get a more interesting job that way.

Good idea . I don’t even care if I’m in it, I’ve just always been fascinated with movie making and would love to watch!
