Run-in Shed Size?

Hi,

I am new to these forums. I have two miniature horses, but not a “real” horse. We have a paddock area that we set up for our minis to have a bigger area than what they already have. In this paddock, we have a run-in shed that we built. We are considering using this area as a regular sized horse paddock. My question is, would this 8’ x 8’ run-in shed be large enough for one regular sized horse? The lowest point of the inside height is 8 ft, it gets taller than that.

Thank You!

Probably would be okay for something 15.3hh (not super thick) and smaller

I kind of doubt a full sized horse would want to go in it. The smallest ones I have at my farm are the old ones we build decades ago and they are 10 x 12 and my horses rarely use them instead opting for the larger ones.

It depends on what you are wanting to achieve – for the horse – with the shed. In other words: will it be the horse’s only shelter 24/7 to escape from rain/sleet/snow/wind and flies in the summer? If so, an 8x8 will offer minimal protection but could work for a hardy horse in winter although the footing inside will get wet and mucky – not enough roof; rain and snow will get inside the shed. Also, that size shed will do little to help protect horse from flies; it just won’t be dark enough inside to deter them.

Basically and 8x8 shed is an umbrella and a wind break – not much more. And that’s okay for some horses.
