Codeman3, when the documentary was being made, the filmmakers were very interested in showing Maria Borrell’s story. Among other things, they wanted to include pictures of the starving horses that were abandoned on her farm when she fled the state to avoid charges of neglect and abuse. Runhappy’s connections vetoed that, wanting the film to be about the horse’s successes and not a sordid tale about her failures. Had the filmmakers spoken to her, it’s doubtful she would have been happy with the result.

I had no idea who Maria was, but since Codeman3 brought up how she was railroaded, I decided to google, and well… I don’t think she’s so innocent.
