Runhappy's trainer fired day after Breeder's Cup

http://www.paulickreport.com/news/breeders-cup/unhappy-borell-sacked-day-after-breeders-cup-sprint-victory/

I have been chronicling this on the racing stables page in my signature. I am absolutely heartsick for her. Mac is famous for going through trainers like toilet paper but this is inexcusable if you ask me. You don’t change a thing, heck not even your underwear after a five race winning streak.

there has got to be a much bigger story behind that… That is a fairly crappy move , though, regardless of motive…

He is famous for this. He has gone through 20 plus trainers over the years. He lets his know nothing racing manager call the shots and it pisses people off but when they stand their ground, they get fired. I am sure it won’t make her feel better but she is in good company.

Wow. Is it normal to work horses the day after a big race? I’m assuming it’s not normal to work them with heat in a leg but since that’s not confirmed, I’m just asking about in general working after a race.

Well they weren’t going to work him or even gallop him, they wanted him to jog, but no, that is not the norm.

Wohlers could have just come over to the shedrow and hiked her leg on a tree, and made her point without screwing with the horse.

That is pretty shitty. I feel bad for her.

The “establishment” seemed to have a target on her back though. Andy Beyers wrote an article in the Washington Post last week inferring that the horse should be taken from her and given to a “more established” trainer. There was even on comment on these here boards recently that the horse was “outrunning” his trainer.
I know she’s not conventional, not a hard boot type, is young and thinks outside the box, but jesus, she trained him to win the friggin’ Kings Bishop G1 and the BC Sprint. Give the girl some credit.
Wohlers herself isn’t exactly the embodiment of established top notch trainer.

Plus Mattress Mack has previous on this.

Shitty.

Christ. This is ridiculous. I can’t tell if I’m more heartbroken or furious.

I hope she received her fair share of the purse. That might help…

There’s not much you can do (when you work for an idiot) but move on.

I’m sure it’s a terrible disappointment. The money may at least give her an opportunity to do something good for her career and take some of the sting out of this. What a tough business.

The RunHappy FB page is a shitshow right now. They’re deleting comments as fast as they can and the page is still flooded.

People are piiiiiiissed.

Holy jesus, I just took a look at that! They have opened one hornets nest there. They will have to hire someone full time just to delete comments as fast as people are posting on that page. It’s crazy.

If you don’t like the heat stay out of the kitchen Mattress Mack

Here’s the Andy Beyer article in the Washington Post last week… https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/runhappy-and-trainer-maria-borell-could-crash-the-breeders-cup-party/2015/10/26/7ccd4eb4-7be1-11e5-afce-2afd1d3eb896_story.html

Runhappy and Borell represent the most charming story of this Breeders’ Cup. McIngvale relishes its feel-good aspects: “Runhappy,” he said, “is better off being where he’s loved, with people who care about him.”

Such a notion, of course, is pure fantasy. Thoroughbred racehorses are better off being in the care of top professionals with extensive knowledge and experience as well as support from the best veterinarians, exercise riders and assistants.
That’s why the same big-name trainers regularly dominate the nation’s major stakes races, and why it is almost unprecedented for a trainer with Borell’s thin resume to win anything as important as a Breeders’ Cup event. History is against her, but she has made no evident mistakes so far, and she does have one important asset. She has the best horse.

Interesting, story about Mattress Mack and his bullying of University of North Texas to rename their Athletic facility … http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2664905

This quote is especially ironic…

It was either rename it, McIngvale said, or redirect his money
to the acclaimed One O’Clock Lab Band, the showpiece at one of the
country’s top music schools. Mattress Mack was serious enough to
take out a one-page ad Sunday in the Denton Record-Chronicle
explaining his demand.
“Right’s right and wrong’s wrong. It’s the right thing to do,”
McIngvale said. “I don’t think firing a guy three weeks after he
had a heart attack was the right thing to do, either. Even Wall
Street is not that callous.”

I don’t think I’ve ever seen racing fans so united in anger.

Mattress Mack wanted to make Happy a social media darling. He succeeded, largely because of Maria Borell. And now? He and lovely Ms Wohlers have committed social media suicide.

Stupid stupid stupid.

ETA: Comments now soaring into the 1000+ range despite frantic deleting.

Horse Collaborative ran a story tonight. Great quote…I only wish I wasn’t banned to go toss it on their page.

“But unlike your discounted mattresses, no one is buying. Go find another hobby to run like a furniture business. Save the circus for the showroom.”

She did not get a % . Apparently the whole dismissal is over the money. She had a contract and worked on a wage.
