Sad situations that are going to be happening too much...

yes, of course owners are ultimately responsible…

but we DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. we need to wait and see.

period.

leaving horses out in the winter without shelter ? that is cruelty? really? horses are cold weather animals and when i lived in ON CAN lots of horses were out in the winter without shelter or blankets - they were fine. [/QUOTE] Out 24/7 with no shelter MBM? I think in some states, an abuse case can be made if there is no shelter. You would let your horse stand out if freezing rain for days with no shelter?? Or blazing sun?? Oh, that isn’t abuse, but RK is. Aaah, I get it.

There 2 other threads on off course

Sad for the horses…although we don’t know if her sitter failed to show…

what i said was: horses are cold weather animals and when i lived in CAnada there were plenty of horses that were out in the winter without blankets and shelter (ie barn) and they were fine.

i didnt say anything about me.

how do you think the horses on the range survive? no one is building them barns.

I find it funny that the neighbor woman in the video was talking about how they’re all starving with bones sticking out everywhere because that certainly doesn’t appear to be the case in the photos. They look a bit muddy but none the worse for wear, honestly. I also don’t think it’s abuse to leave some round bales (that’s a lot of hay) and have someone come by daily to water and check up on things.

Does she not have a cell phone, would they not attempt to contact her before seizing the horses if their only reason for doing so is that they appear to have been abandoned? Is there no shelter on the property period? I’m sure they get freezing rain there, but neighbors are perfectly capable of pestering animal control just because it’s a bit cold and windy. Even if the horses are in fact just fine without access to shelter at that time.

this. Most of that article were quotes from the neighbors. Considering that there have been several threads in the past 12 months about neighbor troubles…I’m hesitant to listen closely to those quotes and give them much weight.

oh good grief! let the speculation begin!

i think this and the other threads need to be locked until WE HAVE THE WHOLE STORY.

we have NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON.

hmmm Ok
Seems like its the right person but…;

and as for

Oh, she’s always been a ‘pretender’. For over 10 years. Many people have seen through her.

Alas she is not alone in that category… And that is not a crime in itself.
The Internet Forums are a funny place but I hope that in this case, at least for the part about the care of the horse, that is just a bad mis undertanding (maybe the person that was suppose to check on them didn’t…?)

Well I hope…

Wasn’t her stallion “on loan” from someone…?

she was fined for something to do with shelters for her horses. but again, we have no idea what really happened!

Me thinks SayItAintSo has a bit of an agenda where this subject is concerned since she has posted this identical topic on nearly every forum. Not too obvious.

Those horses on that video certainly don’t look at all starved to me. The “friendly neighbor” sounded rather clueless about horses as well: “I don’t have horses of my own but I tried to feed hers apples…” wth?

Super confused. I watched the Video and just don’t see the “starving” abused horses. Yes a few look living outside scruffy and maybe one could have used a few more lbs.

The fencing was in a bit of disrepair and the place looked like it needed a bushhogging. But really if she had a medical issue and is alone unless she has the best friends and family in the world I’d expect that some of that would be in constant revolution.

Seems to me she has posted on this very bored that she had plans for them to have free choice hay and someone to stop in on them. If that person wasn’t showing up etc how is it her fault.

Seems like the neighbors got a trigger happy with the lets call animal control. If they were really concerned about the horses not having feed and or at all educated about them would the girls response on the video been "have you attempted to feed them "… “UHHH I gave them some apples”

I feel really sorry for the entire situation how would any of us feel if we had made plans to go to WEG thought are animals were cared for and game home to find they had been impounded by animal control.

That crossed my mind as well

Yes, this is a neighbor that says she is feeding them - apples. Not a person that has a clue about horses.

I didn’t see horses is poor b/s condition. Does the fencing/enclosure need work, absolutely, but that is not a crime. Leaving round bales and water, with someone checking on them is what MANY people do.

From the article “Well-bedded bluffs, coulees and treed areas can serve as alternatives for sheds” Woods have always been considered decent shelter for horses. I also remember my old vet helping one of his clients build a shelter for her horses. It was a 2 sided corner, and no roof.

the article also said that up to -15c horses adapt without too much change, below -15c they need either an increase in food or some kind of shelter.

think about that. horses don’t need shelter to stay alive in winter - they need food. wild horses have lived for a looong time out on the plains with no shelter.

I think the thing that people are calling into question here is the fact that she has been cited and fined (on record with a very simple google search of her name) for animal cruelty once already this year, and was fined in 2008 for loose dogs. The animal control officers stated that there had been an ongoing investigation of the state of things at her place for at least a year. Regardless of how founded that investigation or those previous citations were, I would think leaving the horses for 2 weeks with someone stopping by once per day would be asking for some trouble. That, in combination with a lot of her posts referring to doing most of her own vet and farrier care, is enough to raise eyebrows.

However, I do agree that the neighbor in the video looked a little infatuated with being on camera, and clearly didn’t have the first clue about adequate horse care. I also tend to agree that the horses looked like typical, outdoor grade horses that you’d see in pretty much any rural field around here- certainly not skin and bones as described by the woman in the video. There also appeared to be AMPLE grass, which, in addition to the roundbales (while not ideal), should be enough to sustain a few horses for 14 days.

I also think we should wait until more facts are in. I was disappointed in the Bangor newspaper’s account. Last I heard, it’s no crime to want to be left alone and yet, “reclusive” is thrown around like it’s a terrible thing.

PP frequently posted here that she works nights. She never presented herself here as a cop as SayItAin’tSo asserts. She has said she works in law enforcement, and sometimes has said she’s a dispatcher.

I hope it’s a terrible misunderstanding.

Did someone already post this video:

I,too, hope this is a terrible misunderstanding

Oh My ~ I hope as stryder stated that this is just a terrible misunderstanding ~:frowning:
