Saddle fenders chafing horses sides

Hi all,

I’ve got a Fabtron synthetic round skirt saddle for my horse and recently I’ve begun to notice that she’s thinning hair on her sides where my legs rest. The size of the thinning is about the size of my palm. No skin irritation yet that I can see, it’s been like this for a few weeks now, just looks like the end of the hair has broken off. I’ve been using more leg on my horse because her training is going well, she used to bolt out from underneath me if I kicked her too hard and now I can use leg pressure like any other horse. I’m not spurring her or even using lots of leg, it’s just more than I used to since she’s desensitized to it now. If I was jamming my leg into her I’d understand but as of now I’m clueless why this is happening.
Is there a way to stop it? The fenders are synthetic fabric, and a bit rough to the touch, I was tossing up the idea of replacing them with leather ones or sewing some kind of padding into them. Not sure what else to do, I prefer using leg than pulling on her mouth because she seems to prefer quiet hands, and she’s doing so well, has been mentally super relaxed since she’s being ridden 5 days a week, building good muscle, I don’t want to stop her training and lose any progress. Any tips?

I had the same issue with my gelding and I just sewed fleece in the part of the fender that touched horse’s side. Hair grew back and it never happened again :+1: cheap and effective

My mare gets rub marks in summer from the edge of her saddle pads (dressage). I use fleece-lined or sheepskin lined to mitigate.

That happens to her too! I got her a new 1 inch wool pad that was better support to her spine since I had been using a shitty $30 thin fleece pad that gave her dry spots and figured she needed an upgrade. Now she’s got some thinning at the edge where the pad ends on her spine. No sores and the saddle doesn’t rest on it, it’s like at the edge. No dry spots, it fits nicely over her withers, beautiful expensive pad and I’m like seriously!! Maybe sewing in fleece to the edge will help with that too. I don’t think it’s necessarily hurting her, but the wool is a rougher material then the old fleece one so I imagine it’s chafing as well.

I like the way you think, I’ll try sewing in the fleece! Thanks for your advice!
