Saddle Fitters in MA - Metrowest Area

UPDATE 1/12/18 looking for more suggestions!

Old post below:
Who do you suggest? I would be looking for someone to evaluate the horse as they move, and be honest with me if the saddle is not appropriate for the horse.

I used a well respected saddlefitter over the summer for one of my saddles, and I am afraid the horse did not care for the readjustment. I am not sure it was the saddlefitter’s fault, as I have always been happy with his job[s], but the horse was not amenable to the new fit. I had to stop using the adjusted saddle - he now goes well in my jump saddle which is NOT fit to him yet. He has a huge shoulder which I’ve noticed makes most saddles fall back as he moves.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can’t recommend Karen Withstandley at The Refined Equine highly enough. Love her!

I second Nancy Shedrick…

Had a great time with Kate Howe (fitter) a few weeks ago, she brought about 25 saddles…found just the right one! They don’t push you to order custom but have that option as well. I highly recommend!

Gary Severson. He’s not based here but he’s in the area regularly.

Third for Nancy! I And have heard that Kate is good as well.
A very good friend of mine uses Karen Withstandley and was extremely pleased with her work on evaluating/adjusting existing saddles, and for ordering a custom one.

Advanced Saddle Fit has been very popular around southern NH, though judging by this there might be some recent issues:

(I think there are some other recommendations buried in that thread, but I’m not sure I’d recommend wading through the whole thing even so.)

thank you all. can any of you that answered attest to if the fitter watches the horse in motion, or U/S? and average/ballpark price? looking to have several saddles fitted.

Nancy Shedrick does a GREAT job! She wouldn’t take my money to “fit” my saddle to my horse because it was the wrong saddle for the horse. She said it wouldn’t be fair to anyone to do a bad job on a decent saddle…just not for that horse.

Janie Matocha at Pelham Saddlery. The nice thing about Janie is that she doesn’t represent a specific brand and has access to hundreds of used dressage saddles. She is very good. If she thinks she can make your saddle work, she will tell you, rather than try to talk you into buying a new expensive saddle. She will also stay and watch you ride.

I figure this deserves an update, if very belated.

I was excited to have Nancy Shedrick come out in the summer when my horse was in consistent work, and she looked at three of my saddles, only one of which had been previously fitted to the horse. Horse had been displaying some mild symptoms that he didn’t care for the fitted saddle so as mentioned in the OP I switched him to the non-fitted jump saddle prior to her visit.

So she came out, did a wither tracing, assessed fit of all three, didn’t reflock or even touch any of them, and charged me $250 dollars for on-farm visit and saddle consultation. I was surprised then that she did not reflock any, given her glowing reviews and was more surprised then for her to proclaim that one would fit without needing adjustment. She was very pleasant with me, however.

Okay, fine, I think “at least I have her professional opinion.” About a few weeks in on riding in the saddle she said fit the best (but didn’t reflock as I expected) horse started really demonstrating discomfort with the saddle - these were new behaviors he had not demonstrated before. For instance, he has never threatened to bite me or been girthy and he started to shortly after the saddle she approved was used daily. I gave him some time off.

I emailed her early fall with this news to no response. Emailed again intermittently between November and late December/early Jan and requested the wither tracings so I could have them on file. When Nancy originally came to visit I was very forthright with my long term plan (fit for this saddle now, give me wither tracings and in FEB/Jan’16 I will be purchasing a new saddle with the wither tracings she provides) Instead of supplying me the wither tracing, they sent a somewhat flippant reply a few months later that “obviously the saddle doesn’t fit anymore so we need to come out and remeasure the tracings”. I agree, the saddle doesn’t fit and never did, but I don’t think my guy’s body has changed much especially not in a two/three week time frame it took for him to start displaying saddle-sore symptoms. And secondly, I am so NOT interested in spending another $250 to have a saddle that “fits” not fit. I did some wither tracings myself but would prefer to compare with the notes taken in the summer by Shedrick Saddlery.

Anyway, it is now May and I still don’t have the tracings, or a saddle that fits the horse. I guess you could say I am a little frustrated at this point. My horse is not, as far as horses go, a difficult fit.

Presently, he is going fine in a friend’s borrowed saddle with Thinline pad and has not demonstrated any soreness or behaviors since - to my naked eye it fits him wonderfully with no bridging, rocking, or moving… but it needs to be reflocked.

Who else should I try? Horse in question is a TB. He has big shoulders a wide barrel. He is not a difficult fit according to the sundry fitters who have seen him.

Without providing more detail than this, I had a similar experience. I also won’t use advanced saddle fit ever again.

I would use Diane Williams and Sara Kilguss over some of the names presented here. Sadly my wonderful fitter, Patty Barnett, is no longer fitting. I thought Gary had long since retired.

I pm’d you.

I do appreciate any insight. I feel like this is starting to develop into a dramatic saga. I just want a saddle that is comfortable for my horse and at this point, it seems unattainable.

I shipped my precious Albion Original Comfort dressage saddle (a special order I had purchased on consignment) to Patty last year to have billets and flocking replaced. She told me that turnaround was 1-2 weeks, and I had my saddle back in about 10 days, including UPS shipping. I don’t remember what the final bill was, but it was quite reasonable and included adding nylon to the point billets, conditioned the insides and got rid of most of the creak, and changed the nails-- one was missing the logo and I happened upon a spare set several years ago at Equine Affaire.

My understanding from a post here was that she had bought Gary’s business after apprenticing with him.

I would not hesitate to use her again.

Gary is still working. I think he’s cut back on how many barns he visits but he still comes to fit my horses.

Sorry, I had a senior moment.
Andrea Polumbo from Custom Saddlery does many at my barn.
She watches the horse go and will tell you what will and will not
work. She often has used and demos available for smaller pricetags
than new ones.
