saddle making popping noise in seat?

yesterday I rode a few horses. First 2 horses, totally normal. Third horse, my saddle started making these clicking/popping noises underneath my bum. Mostly when I was using inside leg to push a fresh horse into in outside rein so I was weighting my outside seat bone. Then, POP.

very bad, right? I am assuming the tree must be broken? After it did it a couple of times I just got off, I don’t need to screw up my horse’s back, he’s super sensitive on a good day.

Really, really bummed as this is my BELOVED Tad Coffin TC2 and it was expensive enough without a repair. I would consider it to have very light use, too – it isn’t super new but I bought it pristine, the wax not even worn off the billets. I’ve only had it for a yearish and mostly riding one horse! Ugh. I had another Tad Coffin before and never had a single problem with it.

I’m not super familiar with the TC saddles, but it sounds like something is definitely going on with the tree.

It may not be broken, it could be a problem rivet that holds the spring steel to the tree (again, if the TC has this design, of which I’m not sure). WIth a saddle like that, it’s definitely worth looking into, I would think. Could you contact Tad for a saddle inspection?

Contact Tad and he will probably want you to send back. The repair, if needed, should be covered under warranty but ask to be sure. I had a problem with my TC tree spreading way back when and he had me send it back, had it apart the day it arrived, and back to me super quick. No charge except I paid the first shipping. And they replaced the billets while it was there since he wasn’t happy with them. But he’s great to deal with so I’d just get a hold of him right away to see what he says about the popping.

Ditto. Sometimes saddles get knocked off their racks and land funny, get damaged in a fall of the horse or fall of the rider and the loose horse bangs into something. They hit hard enough the wrong way and it can effect the tree on even high quality saddles.

Or there was a slight manufacturing defect it’s taken awhile to show up. Send it in.

Could be major like the tree or could be a bolt. I had a panel come unbolted from my CWD in the first couple months I had it. It started as a clicking sound when I posted the trot, but only occasionally. The screw was coming loose but I didn’t notice until it had become totally unthreaded a few rides later. That was an easy fix. regardless of the severity of the issue, you’ll need to send it in.
