Saddle pad question!

My beautiful saddle from Allegany Mountain Trail Saddles is finally finished and it came out lovely. If I could figure out how to attach a pic I’ll show it off!

But here’s my question, since it was custom made, I shouldn’t need a pad to adjust the fit of the saddle, so I just need a nice pad. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!!

You are correct. If the saddle fits well, your pad is there to help keep it clean. Saddle pads can also help wick moisture away from your horse’s back and help keep him cool. When I do long rides in the summer, I ride with a [URL=“http://www.dixiemidnight.com/”]Dixie Midnight pad.

While those are very nice blankets, someone who rides in a western saddle should use a pad and not just a blanket. Western saddles are not flocked like an English saddle.

OP, If you don’t want to throw down the money for a 5 Star until you figure out what you like and what thickness you need the Diamond wool pads are a cheap yet great alternative.

After consulting with one of my favorite clinicians who knows my horse and helped me with the specs on the saddle, I wound up ordering a Toklat Coolback pad - their personal favorites which they said will be particularly good in the sticky hot virginia summers! Got this one: http://www.ridingwarehouse.com/Toklat_Coolback_30x30_Square_Saddle_Pad_Contoured/descpage-TC30SSP.html

I think Pocket Pony has a Woolback pad she got from that same site.

I wonder if they truly keep the horse’s back cooler than a wool felt like a 5-star?

(Hot, sticky, south Florida summers here!)

I do! I love that site - they have such a great selection and great customer service.

I also just got a Toklat Coolback pad in black, but I got the barrel-shaped version because of the shape of my saddle - I don’t need a square pad. Can’t wait to use it! I think the Coolback pads are popular among endurance riders…so they must be good 'cause they spend a lot of time in the saddle!

I was asking the same question coolback vs. woolback and they told me for the humidity, the coolback would be better and I could have gone with the barrel shape as well but I think coming from the English world, the square will give me less under my leg so a little closer contact. I talked to the the saddle makers as well and we all came to the same conclusion so coolback contour square it was but I’m too embarrassed to tell you all the color - let’s just say its 'regal"

Oooh, does that mean it’s PURPLE!? Or blue? Or…(trying to figure out what color classifies as “regal”)

Color is fun

Purple it is! He’s a really dark bay almost black and he just looks great in purple (and its my favorite too)!

And the customer service at riding warehouse was amazing. I must have talked to them five times that day and went back and forth about pads/colors etc. and they couldn’t have been nicer and… if you go to their facebook page and like it and code will come up for 10% off (they told me that as well) so niceness, discounts, 2 day shipping for only $5.00, free shipping otherwise, what more could you ask for.

Well you’ll have to post a picture when you get it!

I’m luck that I’m not too far from them, UPS-wise, so ordered mine on Wednesday and it came on Thursday - woot!

Can’t wait to see yours!

I forgot about the Toklat Coolbacks! My husband swears by them. Never knew they came in colors, he just buys the white ones.
I haven’t tried one yet because I hate the “break in” period for fleece pads!
