I’m going to be doing some trail rides, no more than 10 miles but probably closer to 5. I have my heart set on a Diamond Wool pad. However I can’t decide if I should get a 1 inch or 1/2 inch thick saddle pad. My saddle fits well (finally, found one that fits) so I’m leaning more towards the 1/2 inch. What do you all think? I will carry some gear but not a whole lot. Thanks to the help!
I think either one would be fine. Personally, I would pick the 1/2 inch. That’s what my 5 Star is, and I typically ride as much or more than what you’re planning on doing.
Thanks for the reply! I think I like the 1/2 over the 1 inch, but I’m not dead set on it yet. Any more opinions are welcome. I still have a while to think this through while I save up. Thanks!
I never use anything thicker than 1/2 inch.

I wouldn’t go over 1/2 inch either. When it comes to well fitting saddles I think of them as well fitting shoes – a thick sock will feel uncomfortable + be too hot.

Alright, 1/2 inch it is! Do any of y’all have experience with Diamond Wool?
I have a Diamond Wool pad and so far I’m happy with it. I have a 1/2 inch with shims for my mare who is a bit downhill. I’d been having problems with her pad slipping out from under her saddle but I haven’t had the problem since buying the DW pad. I don’t know how it compares to the 5 Star, but it’s good quality.
I have a Diamond Wool with shims. I’m not sure how thick it is. We like it, but it’s now a backup pad because we don’t need to shim anything. 5 Stars are nicer but Diamond Wool are nice quality for the price, IMO.
I’ve heard 5 star is the best you can get however, I can’t afford that for a saddle pad. So the next best thing is Diamond Wool. (From what I can tell any way) Thanks for the help!
If the saddle fits well, a 1/2" pad should suit you fine.
Yeah, a 5 Star is about twice the price of a Diamond Wool. But, you get what you pay for! I absolutely love my 5 Star pads.
When I have a little more money I probably will upgrade to a 5 star and retire my Diamond Wool to my sister. However for now I’ll just stare at the 5 stars. Maybe one day…
