Saddle Rack for a Car?

Hi Everyone. I am currently a grad student and am riding at a really nice barn but there is no tack room at said barn. Each horse’s stall has a locker next to it for the owners tack and grooming supplies.

So what I am wondering is if anyone has come across a small saddle rack that could be kept in the back of my car (I have a Jeep liberty) so it can be relatively tall I’m just not sure if there is anything out there that would fit my needs. My saddle appears to be getting more scratches than when I kept it at my barn that I rode at forever at home. It currently just get leaned up in the far back of my car or leaned against the back seat, when the fiancé’s golf clubs are in the car.

Trunk saddle rack - I’ve not seen this is person - can’t quite decide if this is a good/bad idea re sudden stops it won’t protect your saddle from scratches.

A saddle carry case? make sure that it has (sturdy) dual zips for complete, easy access & a comfortable carrying strap/handles, generally as the price goes up, there’s more padding, ripstop fabric, waterproof, breathable etc - if you end up storing your saddle in the cover, breathable becomes rather important in a wet climate.
I was trying to find online version with good photos of the zips & carrying strap options but failed - note the one I linked is nice as you can choose color options BUT it’s also non-returnable!
If possible look at the different qualities of bags to choose the features you prefer …

There are also saddle covers for rather alot less $$ & much quicker to put on (except a surprising number pop right off) & various features including waterproof, padded, carrying straps etc.

Dover used to sell this small plastic job that was pretty much designed for what you need; not sure if they still do though. I just use the back seat as a saddle rack or I’ve seen some barns use large plastic paint buckets (available at any hardward store for inexpensive saddle racks - you could do something similar in truck and block it from rolling w/ towel or something.

That’s a grand saddle rack but Dover seems to be keeping it for photoshoots only …

I know! Dover used to sell it, but I couldn’t find it when I searched their website. You might be able to find one through someone else, or you could probably get one made pretty easily. I like the stability of the wide base and it also allows you to put things like spurs, helmet, etc there so they aren’t rolling around your car either.

Fitness ball + padded saddle cover or case + seat belt??? I was considering this once. It would be important to get a big enough ball so it doesn’t move around too much.
Otherwise I was thinking maybe one of those back rest type pillows that are very firm and tall enough.
And I second the need to be careful with a case or even a cover that isn’t breathable… You don’t want a moldy saddle.

You might try Schneider’s tack: sstack.com and see if they have anything like the old Dover piece of plastic rack that you could tote around. Also a plastic tool box would probably work as well.

I bought this one after seeing it here and I’m really happy with it. I keep the saddle cover on as well. Only caution is that with saddle on it is a little top heavy, so need a couple of sand bags (I use bags of rice) over the bottom cross bars to keep it from tipping over. It’s great though, because it collapses down out of the way when not in use.

Thanks for the update - I did wonder about this when looking at the photos, nice to know that the fix is so simple :yes:
(I suppose you could slip a dowel etc (shimmed to just fit) between the bottom “legs” as well)

from Dover and it worked great for toting tack around in my car. I used it when I was attending 1-day shows out of my trailer which didn’t have a dressing room or any place for tack storage. That little wooden one was awesome, and I used it for two full show seasons with virtually no wear or issues with it. It just lived in the of my SUV, and I’d pull the saddle (covered) out to use, and then put it back for between classes and transporting. Great solution for anyone working out of their vehicle.
