Saddle recommendations for hubby

We just got home from a 3 day trip into the Eagle cap wilderness - riding into the high mountains, it was BEAUTIFUL. We stayed in a cabin and rode out each day. I have him (hubby) in my dressage saddle, he doesn’t love the western saddle and he did o.k., but nothing for him to hold on to, really. A nice lady there let us borrow her Tucker Endurance Saddle for the 2nd day ride - awesome!!! It doesn’t have a horn, but does have something in the front of the saddle he could hold.

Anyone here have one, or other recommendations? We are now shopping for a nice endurance type saddle for him preferably used, also any locations I should look? I ride english, so haven’t shopped other disciplines for a long time. Thank you

You didn’t say if your husband has his own horse. Unless you buy a treeless saddle I wouldn’t suggest buying a treed saddle unless he has his own horse. If he does have his own horse then you might want to look at one of the Abetta endurance saddles. they are low cost, comfy (I’m told), hornless, very lightweight and come in a couple of tree widths.

A lot of people like the Sensation treeless Hybrid. Extra comfy and lightweight treeless saddle, very secure, but not intended for heavy riders and width suitable for wider horses only.

Tuckers are very popular with the gaited trail crowd. They’re a little too heavy for me, but shouldn’t be a problem for your husband.

I’ve got an Abetta Trinity (I think they’re the Serenity now) with a memory foam seat that I use as my spare saddle. It’s lightweight and affordable and comfy. Not as comfortable as my treeless, but comfortable as far as a treed saddle.

For the ultimate in saddles, look into the Evolution saddle by Hillview. They have a bunch of endurance type models. If I ever buy a treed saddle it will be one of these. They’re a flex-panel saddle so they can be used on a variety of horses. Our local mounted patrol uses their saddles.

If the Perch cross is a wide back, try a Duett Companion Trail: http://www.duettsaddles.com/trail.htm - just add a grab strap and he’s good to go!

I second the Duett Companion. Trumbull Mountain Tack has some good husband models that are on sale as demos - and also they show up on Ebay a fair amount. A deep, comfortable seat and the relatively straight leg position feels very secure. They’re designed for drafty horses.

I just bought a Big Horn endurance saddle. It’s the partial leather partial synthetic. I like it. Very lightweight. This is for trail riding. I normally ride h/j or dressage.

I ride a Stubben Scout (their police/military saddle). Very nice.

Tucker makes a good product from all reports. Some of their designes are based upon the British Universal Pattern (UP) military saddle.

Steele Saddles make a line of “trail riding” saddles based upon the Plantation model. They are a quality product (my wife rode in one for years). They also have a “try before you buy” program. Google them; you’ll be glad you did.

I really like the Tuckers if you can get one wide enough to fit. Also, my favorite saddle ever is my Ortho-flex Patriot- so comfy, fits all of my horses- LOFF IT!

I second the suggestion for the Steele Saddle: http://steelesaddle.com/ I owned a Steele Old Timer model for years and LOVED it, unfortunately it didn’t fit my new horse so I sold it.

For a cheaper saddle, I personally own the Fabtron Lady Trail (your husband could purchase the regular Fabtron) and I LOVE it! http://www.fabtron.com/

Sycamore Creek Saddle

I found this one, and ordered it after speaking with Tony, the distributor . They are made in Columbia and started out for gaited horses. Now they also make saddles for ‘trotting’ horses. He had me do a wither tracing, take and send digital photos, so it should be pretty custom!! Takes about 6 weeks and the one I bought is fashioned after the Tucker that we were able to try. so, hopefully it will be great.
