Saddle shopping

Hey people!

As I am looking for a new horse, I got a tack fitting specialist to come out and look at the horse I am on trial to buy. We found 3 saddles that look spectacular on her, but I am iffy about the brands. Listed below are the options (all 17” saddles)

  • Bates All Purpose SC saddle
  • Devoucoux AP saddle
  • Voltaire Design AP saddle

Any suggestions/favorite brands?

Thanks!

The best one is the one that fits you and the horse the best. Devocoux and Voltaire are French foam saddles and very expensive new and currently trnedyng but as they are semi custom they’ve been built for another horse rider pair. Bates is less expensive new but I think is wool or fiber flocked. Lots of people are happy with their Bates

Is there a reason you want all purpose rather than jumping or dressage?

Well, there’s not really a reason, but I prefer AP saddles to jumping because I do lots of disciplines. Sometimes I’ll be doing equitation shows, and another weekend I’ll be going X/C. I do love jumping saddles, I find them very comfortable, but I feel that AP saddles suit my riding needs better, if that makes sense at all

Ok as long as it’s a conscious choice. AP are definitely jumping not dressage saddles! I haven’t spent much time in modern full blown jump saddles. I own an older AP that I could jump in, and my H/j lessons were in a mess of old saddles :). I have really only been in one modern foam jump saddle, on a green horse doing flat w/t at the trainers (nice saddle, a bit small for me). I don’t know if most of them are poofed up in a way that makes them only suitable for stadium jumping??
