I’ll admit that I have spent most of my life in a jumping saddle and concentrated on fitting the horse when it came to saddle shopping. I have always sworn up and down that I need a 17.5 inch saddle. I have an Andalusian with a VERY short back, so this became difficult. Imagine my surprise when the saddle fitter brought out a Prestige Lucky (a youth saddle) in a size 16 and I fit in it! I thought there would be no way my bum would fit in that saddle.
I did not feel terribly cramped in and it had a nice close contact feel. My horse didn’t seem to have any objections and he was quite forward, but that is just from one ride.
I can fit about 3 fingers behind me so my bum is not eating the cantle. There isn’t a whole lot of saddle behind my thigh, but that doesn’t seem like a bad thing. My legs also fit well into the adjustable knee block. It is just so much less saddle than my last one. It’s crazy. My last saddle put me in a bit of a chair seat so maybe it was too big. I feel more in contact with the back of the saddle now when I post.
So maybe I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time but I never imagined I’d fit a 16/16.5 as a 5’4 size 6/8 roughly 140lb person.
But how does a properly fitting dressage saddle feel on the seat to you? The saddle fitter and my friend said that I look fine (the mirror said so too) and maybe before I was thinking my seat had to be roomier than I thought.
The saddle fitter also said it is not so much about the size of your bum as it is the length of your leg. I have a somewhat long femur.
Is it also ideal in dressage to have a few fingers space on the cantle? Should you feel “cradled” in the saddle? I am going to ride in it for a few days due to my skepticism…is there anything I should look for in terms of fit for me? I am not hurting or off balance, but I’ve spent so long thinking of the horse or riding in jump saddles that I’m not sure what is 100% correct for the dressage rider.
