Saddle storage

Recently mice have gotten into the shed I use for tack storage and chewed on my saddle cover. I’ve been storing my saddle in the trailer but it makes tacking up a pain. Looking for any ideas on how to store my saddle safely in the shed?

Get one of those big rolling trunks people use for shows, can be wooden or plastic Stanley trunk with saddle rack installed inside

I had troubles with mice chewing on my tack for years now. I was never a mice trap kind of person but I must admit since I got my tomcat Marco, no more problems. Better let nature figure that one out, than trying desperately to “protect” your tack

Reviving an old thread to get more specific advice on this! What kind of rack would you install in a Stanley, and/or what kind of big rolling trunk do you recommend? I want to have some place to put saddles that I can lock.

I ended up getting the Burlingham Large Saddle Trunk. I waited until it was on sale so it was less than it would’ve normally been plus I got a gift card promo. I love it and am super happy. The large one fits my 18” English saddle well. It can be locked both top and bottom. Easily fits so much of my stuff.

I haven’t actually done this  with a Stanley trunk but I’ve seen it discussed on COTH

Not sure actually how you install a saddle rack in a plastic trunk. Maybe I was imagining things.

I think you could set a low wooden stand inside the trunk but getting or making a vertical tack locker would be easier day to day.

Any suggestions for where to find a low stand like that? I’m looking for something for medium-term storage vs. daily use and I’m sort of overwhelmed by the price of the vertical lockers.

I know a couple of people that have repurposed a mailbox (and used it as a saddle stand for the car). You might have to make one/have one made if you want a wooden stand.

Depending on where you are Stubbs makes a portable saddle stand that would fit, however in the states you can’t get the saddle stand. You can sometimes get the chicken nesting box from the same brand where the only difference is there’s no opening in the back. I highly suggest measuring your saddle before buying anything. My 18” wouldn’t fit properly is anything no matter what kind of stand I put in it. I also suggest looking on eBay and other let go type apps. There’s normally a few different style tack lockers or upright trunks on them. It’s just a matter of if they’re anywhere near you.
