Saddle suggestion for speed / games : too big for barrel saddle?

I need a saddle for my son who wants to do local speed / games competitions. He is in a 16" saddle, but wants one that is a little more secure for the speed and games. I am looking for a barrel saddle, but most of them don’t come in sizes large enough for him because they are built for women, and the nearby tack shop people said that when you get a 5" cantle on a saddle, it makes the seat about half an inch smaller, so you need to go up a size. Do I really need to stick with a barrel saddle? If not, what other discipline saddle should I look at? Cutting maybe?

Anyone familiar with the Evolution tree?

Saddle size will depend on HIS SIZE and the model of saddle. He needs to go sit in various makes and models of saddles, to see what is comfortable.

A suggestion for male riders, is to look at flat seated saddles, with a wider twist if possible. My guys here, who ride Western hate my narrow twist saddle, anything with the built-up front on it. They are experienced English riders, comfortable on horses, in charge of their horses for a variety of riding activities, so not in the “beginner or intermediate” rider catagory.

My guys are wearing 34-35" waistband pants, not really big guys, easily fit a 15" seat Western saddle. A guy with larger hips, probably will need a bigger seated saddle.

That high cantle on barrel saddles really DOES HOLD you still. Doesn’t allow much of any movement for comfort adjustments. I would certainly not advise taking one Trail Riding all day, you are pretty locked into position for that time you are riding. I know I move myself around in a saddle over several hours of ridng, would be quite unhappy with that high cantle over a long ride.

Maybe things have changed, but the old cutting horse saddles had very FLAT cantles in the past. Sure were not going to hold/force you in place for the rocket speed of a barrel run and turns.

I would be more likely to look at Roping saddles, though they are heavy. Rider has to stay in position for the quick start out of the box. Steer Roping doesn’t have or need the lower cantle for quick dismount used in Calf Roping and tying the calf FAST.

I expect there are a number of higher cantle saddles, without the really tall ones being the ONLY kind of saddle your son could be happy riding in. If the cantle doesn’t wrap around hips so fat forward, the rider legs have more room to adjust and be comfortable sitting, could take a smaller seat size if person is not a big person. I had one with that cantle that really came around you, hated it, couldn’t move, made my hips sore with no adjustability during a ride.

Back to trying out saddles with actual sitting on them for how they feel.

With all the saddle problems I see, I would never order a saddle without sitting in it, trying it on my horse who is ALSO difficult to fit. Especially just buying it by a seat measurement. A 17" seat size in Western is HUGE. Probably going to put the rider back on the loin area, which can be real hard on the horse. I would expect horse to have a sore back with much use, having a rider sitting back that far.

There is only one tack shop within an hours drive of me that carries Western saddles, and they are low in stock because they are expecting new models in January. They only carry a few brands, so there is not much selection. Hence, online ordering is pretty much a necessity.

I sent you a private message.

Also, for what it is worth…I bought a Cactus barrel saddle to use until my custom saddle came in. It has been super comfortable, great on the trail and my hard to fit little mare likes it. Only one time going down a really steep hill did she act unhappy, but she also was in heat and tends to have painful heat cycles.
That being said, I have ridden this same mare up and down some other rough trails and she was happy. My only concern was that a barrel saddle has enough bar coverage for heavy hill work.

Most people ride in a barrel saddle that measures an inch smaller than what they would ride in for a pleasure/roping/reining saddle.

i really like the saddle in the picture but i do barrel racing, pole bending ,etc anyway i dont use any barrel saddle barrel saddle make me personally have less balance they seem to push me forward a bit to much and don’t let me move at all so i just use any saddle right now i am using a B bar B western show saddle that i really like i just put barrel racing stirrups in it

You can game in whatever saddle makes you feel comfortable and secure. If that’s a dressage saddle, then that’s what you use!

I once barrel raced in my big WP saddle…NOT a fun thing. I ended up doing most of it without my stirrups, then rode a HUGE buck heading back to the finish line…that will not be happening ever again…

Rocking R’s are good quality saddles, I have three. Well, two. Sold one this weekend.

I would think he needs to sit in something. If you are going to speed events, ask about sitting in saddles. If he can find someone about his size to approach, he can get some feel for what is going to feel good to ride in.

We ended up with the Rocking R Mounted Shooting Saddle. It’s very similar to a barrel saddle but built for a man. Works great.
