Hi all, trying to help my new-to-horses friend find a saddle for his horse. They’re just doing low level stuff. Currently riding his Appendix in an 18" Bates Evolution which fits the horse well. Problem is he barely fits in it and puts him in a chair seat. He tried my Antares Spooner, which fits horse well and is much more balanced for him, but it’s too small. The largest size is an 18" and he needs at least an 18.5 or 19. The Antares Skylla and Signature is too curvy for his horse’s straight back. Do you know of any other brands that are fairly straight from front to back AND come in larger sizes? TIA!
An 18 inch Butet will actually measure 19”. I’m not familiar w Antares. Highline Tack is a good source of used ones, as is Double Osk Tack. Hope this helps.
Black Country - specifically the Ricochet or Wexford model. Look at Fineline, Aiken, Maryland saddlery and maybe Pelham for used options.
Stubben definitely comes that big, but I’m not sure of the tree shape.
Smith Worthington may work depending on how straight his horse’s back is. They’re not super curvy, but are too much for my flatter backed mare.
Most of the UK brands will make one in that size if he wants to go custom.
I ride my Hanno/TB in a Spooner that fits him very well.
I ride my Quarter in a CWD SEO1. The Spooner is too curvy for him. The CWD SE01 fits him well, having thin front panels that acccomodate his buldgy shoulders. It has a flattish tree and nice wide/flat back panels for his wide/flat back.
I find the ride/balance in both (Spooner and CWD SE01) saddles to be quite similar. For example, my Voltaire puts me a different kind of position that I have to adjust to.
If I wanted to explore another fit for my Quarter, I would try a wide Butet.
Thanks everyone - this gives us a lot to look into!
