Saddlebred Western Horse?

I know someone here rides a Morgan WP. Anyone have a Saddlebred? Want pics and stories! I’m kinda falling in love with the barbiedoll look. Not sure my dressage Saddlebred would go for it…

There was actually a saddlebred with the classic QH low head and mincing trot at one of the Academy shows once. I prefer the proud high headed look myself, with the dress code on the dressed up side https://www.google.com/#q=saddlebred+western+pleasure

I ride the pony Western and he winds up looking like a Baroque type with his short neck. I don’t think we’d ever be successful in the show ring. Barrels maybe.

Shatner Pleasure Class at Saddlebred shows — the ones I’ve seen I’ve liked because in general, the horses are out there moving nicely, their heads are up, it reminds of what WP used to be years and years ago. Plus the women are all decked out in equitation suits or fancy shirts/pants, there’s lots of silver — looks like a ton of fun to dress up for!

Saddlebreds are great western horses! There are several groups on Facebook for ASBs and people do talk western. I’m sure you could get questions answered!

The breed association FB page has a western horse as their profile pic right now: https://www.facebook.com/americansaddlebred

A dressage horse would probably do alright as a local level Saddlebred western horse. Teach your horse to neck rein and jog

There is also a Working Western class which consists of a rail portion and a trail course.

This one, for sale here in AZ, works cows.

Not me & sorry, no pics.
My farrier’s wife shows a very nice Saddlebred WP.

Re: retraining: what Renae said

I can’t even picture a saddlebred doing the low head thing. At least not mine. She’s only 15.1, but her neck is never ever low…except when she’s eating!

I think she’d have fun with it, and it would be something new for her to get her somewhat overactive brain wrapped around. She’s 19, but she acts like she’s about 5.

Yes! That’s what I thought too. They look like Barbie horses, and it just looks like…fun! I think it will be a little less demanding on her than Dressage currently is.

And yes, it would be open show open division WP where they should judge based on breed standards. Should being the operative word!

Focus on manners and consistency, don’t worry about achieving an extreme head set. Another area Saddlebreds as doing well in is western/cowboy dressage.

![](organ WP, horse is 14.1 trainer is 6’6"… horse was a trooper, even though she was a mare she could beat them all

I’ve had ASBs who would go low at home. My current horse will jog or lope along on a loose rein with his head level and he feels exactly like riding my good Appendix QH I had when I was a kid. BUT… take them to a horse show, put them in the ring… and its a whole new ball game!

Clanter, that mare is gorgeous!!

SmartAlex, my mare does relax and go mostly level, but not for long!

I always have a laugh as the Foxie horse was a wonderful western pleasure (she was also a national champ competitive trail horse)

But she was supposed to have been our kid’s Saddle seat horse … she did everything but saddle seat

I grew up with this one.

One more FB group for you. One of the posters has pics of her ASB western show horse cutting cattle on her ranch. She also competes in Western Dressage with her.

I was lucky to be there that night

The last time I went to the Rockbridge Co Fair in VA, the open western pleasure class was half quarter horses and half saddlebreds. It looked like 2 different classes were in the ring at once.

With all the bling, rhinestones, and silver, I think they should really own it & call it Parade Pleasure (tapaderos optional).

 nope that’s the Arabian I grew up with!

This was my Saddlebred.
