I’m thinking of getting a new saddle. I currently have a County that fits my guy ok, but puts me very upright. I would love something custom to him and me.
Since I have a wool flocked saddle now, I know that I love being able to have it reflocked to fit other horses and I love that it never gets hard like foam. I know that foam has certainly improved over the years, but I am leary of something that cannot be changed. A friend of mine got a custom CWD and the panels never really fit her horse right. And once you take away foam, you can’t put it back. I’m thinking about a French style saddle, though it doesn’t necessarily have to be French. I’m just not looking for another County or something like Black Country.
I know that most French saddles come foam flocked. Are there any that do wool flocking as an option? I’d like to stay around or under $5k for a fully custom saddle. My horse is on the narrower side of a County medium tree but does have big warmblood shoulders. He is a bit slab sided but my medium Stabilizer fits pretty well with a Mattes pad. I sat in an Herve Godignon years ago and fell in love. I’m not a big Butet fan, though I haven’t sat in a new one. The pommel was too high for me, but that saddle was probably from the 1990’s so I don’t know if the design has changed. Google hasn’t gotten me many good results and most people I know are totally fine with foam. So, COTH, any leads?
