Saddles with a fit like collegiate graduate

HELP! I’m in a market for a new saddle as the current doesn’t fit my narrow mare with flat back. I tried shopping with tracings at the local tack shop. Tried over 20 saddles, took 3 home for a trial.

  • A Passier she absolutely hated
  • a new Albion Evolve Elite Lux that fit passably (a bit too wide) but was at least half size too big for me (can’t quite decipher the measurements HD-SS-175-2-RO-2 if any experts here) and she seemed to like.
  • a new Collegiate Graduate that fit like a glove with whatever off the rack tree it had and put me in a decent position, but it is just (IMO and no offense) a pretty bad quality saddle made of Indian leather and just… ehh I’d like to keep as my backup plan.
  • I’ve also tried a used Equipe EK EVO Carbon that I liked a lot (size 17.5 +1), but the fit was also a smidge too wide and the seat definitely too big to me (basically similar fit to Albion with all of its shortcomings).

Is there another saddle that is better quality than the collegiate with a similar fit? I’m trying to avoid going custom.

Maybe a used County or Beval natural? I’ve had luck with both on narrower, flat-backed horses.

The current Collegiate saddles are made by the same company as the new Crosby line, and were made with the same basic tree shape as the Bates saddles a few years ago. It might be worth trialing a new Crosby or Bates to compare the fit.

Rockhound Saddles on Facebook has a 17.5 M Albion Evolve Elite Lux right now (and offers trials).

I have a few saddles right now and I have found the Bates type saddle fits my guy better than any of my others.

I bought CWD, had a custom Kentaur made, a Loxley dressage saddle and then I picked up a Bates Victrix at a tack shop closing sale.

My horse is much more free and a lot quicker to soften in the Bates.

I’m not brand biased or panel biased. I think if it works better for both of you who cares. However I do prefer the victrix over other Bates models. Quality is on par with the French saddles. Downside, you pay 5k cdn for one. I was lucky and found mins for $3400

Good luck!!!
