Safe choice options?

Is there a better quality feed that is similar to safe choice? I normally feed it but feel like the quality is not consistent. Tia

Is Seminole available in your area? Nice feeds, broad choices, many low starch.

Darn. No Seminole. Any other suggestions??

If you give location we can help you by knowing what brands are available in your area,

Otherwise, Triple Crown.

Safe Choice is right on the bubble in terms of safety for horses on the metabolic spectrum. If your horse is sensitive, there are other feeds out there that would be more suited to their needs.

That said, I feed Safechoice Perform, and I am very pleased with it. Now, I also feed a bunch of beet pulp, and a cup of freshly ground flax seed to everyone. But, I like the 14% protein, 9%fat and 15% fiber in Perform. YMMV.

Buckeye, Tribute, Triple Crown would all be better options. I’m not a fan of SafeChoice feeds.

We need to know what brands you can get.

SafeChoice is a line of feeds - which one were/are you using? How much are you feeding, and what are the details of the horse(s)? Age, weight, workload?

Hi. In Texas. I was feeding Safechoice Original. He’s a 5 year old warmblood with anxiety issues.
just switched to Triple Crown complete… we’ll see.

any other suggestions if this doesn’t work? thanks

I’m a complete amateur on feeding topics, but you will see two questions:

  1. Has he been tested for ulcers?
  2. How much of this feed is he getting, and would he be better served by less pellets and more hay? (In the more extreme version of this, a lot of hay plus a ration balancer – but that’s most appropriate for horses in light work or just easy keepers.)

How does that manifest?

Not a bad switch. I probably would switch to the TC Sr for even lower NSC, 11.7% vs about 18%.

If the horse has anxiety issues I would lower his NSC even more than switching to the Complete. TC Senior would probably benefit him better with NSC at 11.7%

My horses looked poor on SafeChoice feeds - they maintained a decent weight, but there was no bloom. Shiny coats and refreshed personalities returned within weeks of switching to Triple Crown.

just a quick update. Switched him to triple crown senior and I’m seeing a good change in attitude and performance. thanks for the help.
