Safe joint supplements (oral or injectable) for horse that had complicated laminitis/foundered

Hi Everyone,

Just as the title states, looking for ideas on safe joint supplements for my horse that came out of a complicated case of laminitis/founder.

My vet is looking into this as well but I’m interested in options that people outside of Canada may suggest as well.

If there are any vets out there that want to chime in I would love it.

Thanks!

I’ve used Lubrisyn HA for my previously foundered IR horse. Can highly recommend it for arthritis and other joint pain.
I started using it many years back before Hyaluronic Acid became so popular. works on my dog and my joint problems also.

Thanks Marla. That is about all we’ve come up with. Have you had any issues with the xanthan gum or maltodextrin that seems to be in all of them?

No other suggestions?

LubriSyn or Hyalauronix, both top dressed HA gel starting when it first became available, 2004 or 5. I used it for 5 or 6 years, was able to get off the monthly IV Legend (HA) shots and drop the IA joint injections of HA to once a year… None of the rest of the less pricey orals available at that time had much, or any, noticeable effect.

I discontinued it because it no longer was having any effect on 20 year old joints. On the plus side, HA is now the go to choice in skin care products so we were way ahead of the times with the best looking skin and nails in any barn. I took a teaspoon a day for my 50 year old knees and other joints. Worked noticeably, didn’t sound like a popcorn machine coming down the stairs.

Not understanding why any of these products would be contraindicated in IR or previously foundered horses? Many put those on HA. Helps most of them move easier. Not all though, no magic bullet for age related deterioration of joints. Whole lot of BS out there too.

Thanks findeight. I can get Lubrisyn but found a Canadian one that I decided to try first. If it doesn’t work then I’ll try the Lubrisyn. It seems to be the most consistently good one and have the “best” reveiws.

The hyaluronic acid seems to be the best one for IR or foundered horses. I wanted to know if there were any other options. We’re wanting to stay away from glucosamine etc. just to be safe.

Nice to hear it helped you out too. I’m pretty creaky on a good day too…might try it.

Hey, for what it costs in that big jug, dam horse can share. Makes most people pee taken by mouth, don’t try it with a double expresso blast and get in the car for a 2 hour drive:lol:.

Haa good to know. Thanks for the heads up as I generally need to go every 15 minutes on good day anyway!

I have a seriously IR horse who foundered big time in 2012. I had him on HA until I learned about this:

https://equithrive.com

my vet carries this product so it is vet approved for my horse. He’s been on it for a little over two years. My IR horse also has an old fractured sacrum with some arthritis buildup. There is no magic bullet for him but this does seem to work as good or better than HA.

I favor this product for him because its primary ingredient is Resveratrol.

best of luck in finding something that works for your horse:)

I have mine on SmartFlex Senior and Remission. He will eat the SmartFlex from my hand. I do notice that it helps him move more comfortably. I wet about 2 cups of hay pellets to stick the Remission to them. The Remission is for hoof health. I have noticed a difference with this as well.

I get that you are staying away from Glucosamine, and SmartFlex has a significant amount, but it does help… just in case you go the glucosamine route…

Do share which Canadian option you decided to try!

Fellow Canuck here

Dunno about Resveratrol (which might act as an anti inflammatory and metabolism,/blood sugar regulator in horses as it seems to in mice), for joint lubrication. Which is what HA does. They don’t do the same thing.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. Much appreciated.

I mentioned some of the supplements that had reservatrol in them but my vet and I weren’t sure about how much sugar might be in it because of the whole grape seed thing…maybe we’re off base on that one. I’ll call the company and ask them about it. I liked the idea of the Equithrive.

I’ll share my findings. Vet said I should see results (if we’re going to have any) around the 15 day mark.
