Safetly Stirrup Options

I am looking for options and opinions on various safety stirrups.

I witnessed the horror of a young rider being dragged around and around the warm up ring today, and nothing anybody could do but keep the outgate blocked, and the other horses in the ring quiet. Eventually her stirrup leather came off the bar, but it took too long. It was the type of bar that just sweeps up (not the kind with the folding arm).

The only thing that could have helped would have been a safety stirrup.

being dragged is a phobia of mine, and seeing it just made it more real, so now I am looking into getting safety stirrups for my horses, and encouraging my clients to get them.

I already use Peacock’s on my lesson saddles, but would prefer something “prettier” for showing.

Looking for ideas.

(edited to add: I think the rider is mostly ok. She was conscious the entire time. )

I just went through a search of the options.

You can see the ones I found here:

I bought two different pairs. My reviews are here:

Safestyle: https://equineink.com/2018/07/24/safestyle-stirrups-review/
Acavallo Arena: https://equineink.com/2018/05/31/acavallo-arena-stirrups-review/

Having now ridden in them for several months I would say they are both comfortable. I find I need to pay attention to the Acavallo stirrups to make sure I have them facing the right way. The Safestyle stirrups have the offset eye which makes them fall better without twisting the leathers.

Thanks! I found the Acavallo for sale from Greenhawk for $250 or so, the only other safety stirrups I found sold locally were $500+

I need to ask Equine Canada if mixed silver and black are dressage legal under the new rules…the new rules say black OR silver, but the stirrups I see available are a mix of the two.

My daughter has a pair of the Kwik-out stirrups. We bought them used. They are available via ebay through some international sellers for about $125. (I assume shipping would be extra.)

She has never caught her foot during a fall, so we don’t know how they work from personal experience. However, they look nice–not that different from regular fillis irons.

Yup. They are wicked expensive. The SafeStyle stirrups are a very good deal and they look pretty conventional. Just make sure you don’t order the wrong size because they do not accept exchanges.

these come in Silver
They look really good. I bought JIN and Lorenzini after I tried to fit my feet through and couldnt, and couldnt afford these

I really like the look of those! Will try to find in Canada.

Freejump is another brand for those looking. Lots of different options for colors and styles; the Freejump Soft’Up Lite is geared toward a smaller foot. Tech Stirrups are great looking, very clean.
