Safety vests

Looking for info on a good quality mid level safety vest - not an air vest. What are people liking these days. Pretty sure mine should be replaced as its probably 20 years old now…

Look for one with a BETA 2018 label. These are tested against industry standards. If at all possible, try a variety of brands, in person, with the help of someone who knows how to fit them. Each brand is slightly different and they fit different shaped people in different ways.

At 20 years old, it is certainly time to replace your current one!

Race Safe vests are very comfortable, and less expensive than the Tipperary. My steeplechase jock friends all wear them.

I replaced my 10 yr old tipperary with the certified version when the EC rule change went thru - eek I had not realised how much my vest had broken down until I put the new one on! I prefer the tipperary vests but If you can try on some different brands as someone already said different brands suit different body types better, and check for any regs for certification standards for whatever organizations you ride with.

racesafe motion 3 is really comfortable. I read somewhere they need replacing way more freq than every 20 yrs because the foam degrades.

Yikes does his doctor know? I kept it a secret for the more than 10 years that I was riding on Coumadin because I was afraid the farm would consider me too big a liability and wouldn’t allow me to ride.

Like helmets, after about 5 years the materials begin to degrade.

Not to hijack the thread, but yes his PCP and cardiologist both know. Ten years ago at age 24 he was catastrophically ill with misdiagnosed endocarditis. He ended up with two mechanical valves and a pacemaker. We had a very long talk at the time about risks. Riding, playing Polocrosse and eventing were things he chose to do with a clear concept of what was what. He’s since given up polocrosse, but has evented through training level and currently is playing with jumpers. Riding, and being able to ride literally !saved his life (from a mental aspect). We chose Race Safe vests because of their certifications and fit. He also rides with an Arro helmet. And oh yeah, as collateral damage from the heart issues he lost his lower right leg. So he also rides with a prosthetic leg.
