Salmon for Dogs?

I’m torn on this. I am going to have salmon tonight and want to give Buck some. I keep hearing and reading conflicting information.

Thoughts?

Mine eat salmon and sweet potato dog food. . . .what negatives have you heard about it?

Various sites if you Google “salmon good for dogs”. It kind of looks like raw is bad (no issue there!) but cooked…?

I think it’s just an issue if fed raw

One of the many beauties of living in BC - My husband is a fisherman - our dogs eat salmon all the time, but not raw although I’m not sure it would make a difference.

Of course, make changes slowly…

He gets a little bit:) He gets a little bit of everything  You should have seen his little face when he tried pork roast for the first time. He’s a good boy, no begging or rude behavior, so he always gets some.

cook it and give it to him.

HAHAHAHH!!! Did he call you and tell you to say that??

That reminds me of the scene in Underdog (yes, I know, cheesy but ohsocute) where the beagle is staring at the kid and chanting, “Give the dog your food. . . .give the dog your food. . .”

He had a small bite and liked it

I give mine salmon once a week, it’s great for their coats.

Salmon for dogs

My Irish Red and White Setter is on a salmon and brown rice dry dog food diet. He has a great coat and the cats love his food. The only drawback is that his breath smells like fish.

raw salmon, particularly from the Pacific Northwest carry an organism that can be quite toxic. raw fish is the danger, cooking should be fine

dead fish on the beach and river are a real danger and if your dog goes loose and you are near a spawning stream you need to be very careful

Thanks hoopoe!

Yep, no raw salmon, but cooked is OK. My dogs get a bit of salmon every time I make it for us, I cook an extra bit of filet for them. They are spoiled ;).

I feed my dogs salmon quite often. Sometimes it’s fresh/frozen(freezing makes it safe), sometimes it’s canned(rinse lightly first), & once in a while I’ll throw it on the grill just enough to sear it.
The only thing you need to watch for it that’s it’s “wild-caught” NOT farmed.
I’ve been feeding it this way for years & never have had a problem.
I also feed a wide variety of other types of fish. Dogs love frozen whole smelt, little fish Popsicles…LOL

I’m with you Canaqua. Buck got his own over easy egg already this morning

peanut, I might cook up this other piece and freeze it then, in small pieces for later for him.

When it comes to sushi, it is only sockeye that has to be frozen first before being made into sushi.

When it comes to our own bbq salmon, my husband catches his own, then fresh, fresh, fresh, he scales it and cuts the skin off with a very thin bit of pink left on it, then bbq’s it skin side down until crispy – so good. He is a bit of a guru re salmon around here. Guests love the crispy skin as an appy served with a dipping sauce of soya, ginger, garlic, honey (teriyaki type).

i have been cooking for my dogs for months, now. It is not an easy course of action, but it costs me the same as expensive dog food and i know nothing is processed. Cooked Salmon is fine and actually a nice thing for them to eat b/c it has fish oil. ( maybe cooking ruins that, idk) But it’s not going to hurt him for sure.

Raw salmon is fine for your dogs as long as it is frozen first for 2-3 weeks if it came from the Pacific NW (this applies to all salmonoids, which includes trout too). All my dogs love raw salmon (they get the whole fish and particularly love the heads).
