Sam Shepard

TB breeder (actor and playwrite) Sam Shephard has died.

Here’s the article from the BloodHorse: http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/222832/breeder-actor-playwright-sam-shepard-dead-at-73

ALS. What a curse to take someone so young. RIP Sam

That’s sad news.

But what a life he lived.
He was the drummer in the friggin’ Holy Modal Rounders … as odd-ball, off the wall a musical aggregation as you could get. Great actor AND a great playwright. Lived with punk rock icon Patti Smith before she was famous. A lover of horses who bred a few good ones. An accomplished banjo player. A rugged, handsome specimen of American manliness.
He did his own thing.

RIP Sam.

I had no idea about his affiliation with racing.

Had the good fortune of spend some time with him at the sales over the years. One of my favorite times was one morning at the Saratoga Sale sitting at a table having a breakfast at the old “snack bar” on the grounds with Ms. Chenery, Who I had know since Secretariats racing days. I asked Ms Chenery when the heck is a movie on Secretariat going to get made. She laughed and said as soon as I read a screen play that is worthy. I said well, there’s a man right here that knows a thing or two about writing.

Sam was pretty much in person as he came off on the screen in a lot of ways. A regular guy that enjoyed talking horses, hanging out with horses and the people who did the same. A good friend of mine and his saw him for the last time 2 weeks ago. He was in bad shape but took it in stride. His mind was willing but his body wasn’t. But still was up for a couple of Margaritas.

Possibly the most horrible way to die from a disease.
With cancer, you can at least get medication for the the pain.

I will miss this talented man. One of my writing idols. Wish i had the opportunity to meet him. Didn’t know he was a horse guy – but did hear that he never flew – wouldn’t get on an airplane.

I had no idea he was into racing. I love his plays and I hate ALS.

You have lived quite a life too, gumtree.

Hope you’ll write a book someday!!!

Sam Shepherd truly had the right stuff, sad he’s gone, but glad his suffering is over.

I wish that when men want to get affiliated with the horse world, they wouldn’t automatically think that racing is the best choice.

I didn’t know him or of him, but rest in peace

I’m sure you have some underhanded point you’re trying to make, but Sam Sheppard was affiliated with the horse world long before he was breeding and racing TBs.

Sorry, i now realize that it sounds like I’m using his death to make a punch at an industry, which was NOT what i was trying to do. I just meant that lots of men seem to think that racing is the only “manly” discipline. I don’t know who Sam S. is, so i don’t know his history, i apologize.

How ironic since many are familiar with him only based on that one movie. Hope he finds whatever’s next as facsinating as he found this life, he had a good ride.

Wow, how terribly inappropriate.

This is totally unnecessary as CPC Grace apologized in post #12

Has anyone seen ‘Never Here’? That appears to be his last acting role.

He was great in ‘August Osage County’.
