Hi everyone! In the market for a new helmet. I currently have CO AYR8 and hate it!! Fits my head well but is SO hot! I heard the OneK and Samshield are manufactured at the same factory. The OneK is about $300 I believe and the Samshield is around $400-450 for the shadow matte. Which has the better ventilation? Is the Samshield worth the extra money?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my One K’s. I have both the suede and matte helmets. I tried on the Samsheilds and they plain didn’t fit me, so I’d try them both on and decide which is more comfortable! If it doesn’t fit as well the money won’t be worth it. While I haven’t worn the Samsheild while riding, the One K’s have mesh vents v. the tiny front vents on the Samsheild, so I would imagine you’d have more ventilation in the One K.
Definitely try them on! Just because they’re made at the same place doesn’t mean they’re the same helmet at all - I fit perfectly in the Samshield and needed a long oval OneK. I wore a long oval IRH and then a GR8 if that helps at all.
I adore my OneK. First and only helmet I have actually LOVED to be honest.
I love my OneK! The ventilation is great and keeps your head really cool. I’m also in the long oval head category and the OneK fits me perfect.
I think your decision will be made as soon as you try them on. I went with a Samshield because the One-K I tried on didn’t fit me quite as well. I’ve never ridden in one, but it does look like it has more ventilation than the more conservatively vented samshield. I fell in love with my Samshield as soon as I tried it on and all my rationalizing about the price went right out the window.
See if your local tack store (or order from SmartPak) will let you buy both helmets and take them home to wear around for 45 minutes each (not at the barn at your house–so they don’t get dirty and you keep the tags on). I went from a CO to a Samshield and now love the Samshield. I tried the One-K on but didn’t like the fit as much…plus, I must admit I loved the way the Samshield looked. Now–having ridden in it too, I love it more.
I have a OneK and tried on a Samshield. Fit is very similar IMO. I LOVE the OneK. It is so light, well ventilated, fits great and is super flattering. Sizing is a little different though-not as many options as the Samshield. OneK only does XS-XL, whereas the Samshield is numbered like other helmet makers (so like 6 3/4, 7 1/2, etc) I would say that the Samshield overall in terms of details/materials used is a higher quality, as well as offering a TON of customizeable options. But for the difference in price you have to determine if that is worth it to you (assuming both fit you equally as well). I see plenty of OneK’s in the show ring (especially lately).
I have a OneK and I LOVE it. Took a few tries to get the right size (my fault-didn’t look at the chart correctly…) but once I found the right one it was great. You can actually feel the air coming through the vents and it really is a great helmet.

Love the look on both. If I were going for higher end and the fit was good, I would go with Samshield, super low profile and snazzy without being obnoxious. I currently wear a OneK and love it, bought as the best looking helmet for price as opposed to Samshield. We have both going in our barn right now of the newest helmets bought, and everyone has been happy with both.
Also have the OneK! Charles Owen doesn’t fit me, and the others in store were so-so or too darn expensive. The great thing about OneK is that they have the liner that’s easily removed and replaced. They’re just lovely! Cool, fit well, and don’t give the bubble head look so common with CO.
I have a Samshield shadow matte and absolutely love it. National helmet day is coming up in June, many tack shops offer 10-20% off on helmets. I did this when I got mine and couldn’t be happier
I have heard good about both. I have ridden in a onek, but I have ridden in a samshield and LOVED it. It’s my sisters, so I don’t ride in it regularly, but it seemed just as ventilated as my speed air. If you don’t have somewhere to try it on in person, order one of each from smartpak and pick which one you like, free return on the other.
Another vote for OneK.
I absolutely love mine, and it keeps my head significantly cooler in the Summer.
The OneK did not fit me at all (nor do the GPA types). I prefer the Samshield.
