San Antonio,TX barns

I have searched and found some older posts but wondered if there are any new barns since the last thread a few years ago. I am looking for a h/j barn in San Antonio that is not on the north side. We will be just south of downtown and traffic at 5 pm does not sound appealing to go through rush hour.

I currently own a jumper but I am a hunter rider at heart, so I am looking for a barn that excels in both sides that goes to local and some rated shows. I would also be happy with a small program. I previously showed on the A circuit but financially, that is not in the cards at the moment- but still, want to pop around the A/O jumpers a few times a year.

Any input would be great!

Oakwell Farms with Whitney and Frankie Owens. Top notch training and care and they go to all levels of shows

Uhhhh…that’s on the South side and looks nice but according to their website, all clients are required to buy a complete wardrobe for their horse in stable colors, a matching tack trunk and must attended a minimum 4 shows a year or be billed $800 at the end of the year for each of the four shows they did not attend… Board itself isn’t too bad and lesson/ training appears to be a la carte priced and reasonable.

Might be a good option for OP, might be over budget with what sounds like 2k worth of required barn logo and color wardrobe and trunk and minimum required services tacked on. Local h/j shows are scarce in that area so Rated is probably what you need to do to meet the 4 show minimum.

Also, their website states lessons are not being offered at this time ( dated 2017). Might want to tell them they need to update their public face that comes right up on Google if they do currently offer lessons and clarify if they even offer lessons outside of a required full training package which is not mentioned. Maybe they mean they don’t have school horses but they just say no lessons.

Might want to carefully read their Web page. Kudos to them for providing specifics and it is on the south side but they have additional requirements clearly spelled out and priced. Including a required minimum number of shows ( rated, no local HJ shows on their schedule, really aren’t any down there), required complete custom blanket and sheet set and tack trunk in barn colors and logo. And a Himalayan salt block, they give you the first one, you buy the rest. First time ever seeing that one.

Judging by what OP wrote, might not be a good fit for what she’s looking for and she might not be their target client.

It is totally not true that there are no local HJ shows in the San Antonio area. There is a series of them at the Rose Palace.

Might want to check out Rachel Gray. She does both local shows and some A shows in Katy.

Johnny and Claudia at twisted oak fit the description but not the location. Limited options in SA unfortunately.

Interesting about their website! My niece rides there and has been to several local shows with Whitney and the assistant trainer. I would encourage the OP to call them as an option as the info on the website has not been her experience.

Thanks everyone! I’ve been mapping the drive to Twisted Oak as it seems to fit well and it just hits that hour mark at times. I will give Oakwell a call as well.

If I didn’t have a retiree that I also pay for, my budget would be different but I have to ensure the old guy has a good retirement after all the years he gave previously.

I rode at Oakwell in high school with Frankie and Whitney’s parents and it was a lovely farm. They do a really nice job and at that time, did have an at home trainer who taught some lessons and would take customers to local shows when they were on the road. Granted, my experience is quite out of date, but it was a good one.
