Sarcocystis fayeri and muscle disease

One of my mares has pssm type 2. I came across this article. What exactly is Sarcocystis and how is it transmitted? Has anyone tried treating a horse with muscle stiffness and exercise intolerance with Marquis?

My mare is exercise intolerant and sometimes you can feel her hind leg sort of misstep behind. I assumed that was from muscle stiffness.
