Sarcoid Supplement?

I rescued a horse from a killpen in December. Honestly, my objective was to have him humanely euthanized so he didn’t have to weather the trip to Mexico. He had a large mass on his knee and he could hardly walk.

When he got to the vet to be euthanized, the vet called, “I think we can fix this. It appears to be proud flesh.” The vet removed as much of the mass/proud flesh as he could and off the little guy when to quarantine board.

Jumping ahead. The mass was removed twice. After the second debulking it grew back with a vengeance. He came home to me where my vet biopsied the mass. Not proud flesh… a HUMONGOUS Sarcoid! He has two other smaller sarcoids as well.

Direct treatment to the Sarcoid has been determined (Xxterra). I’m wondering if he wouldn’t benefit from some sort of feed through supplement as well, as we battle this sarcoid and then his other two. Does anyone have any recommendations? Maybe some sort of immune boosting supplement?

Thanks!

Oooh I can help with this. I’ve never had a horse with sarcoids, but my best friend’s horse had one on his leg that WOULD NOT GO AWAY. Injections, removing it surgically, it always came back. She put him on this mushroom stuff and it never came back. I can’t remember which one it was, I just texted her to ask and will say once I hear back from her.

Ok so here is what she said:

She did radiation injections biweekly to make it shrink. Then applied Xterra once when it was tiny to make it dry up and fall off. Put him on Mushroom Matrix Focus (https://marystack.com/ecp-equine-focus-equine-matrix-450g/) but you might be able to find something similar that isn’t as expensive.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Pretty sure that had more to do with the radiation and xxterra than the mushroom potion 🙄.

I’m sure you can find someone who will happily sell you a supplement, but is not going to make any difference to a sarcoid. They do sometimes spontaneously go away - I had one spontaneously regress following a biopsy of it.

No direct cause and effect here, but we fed grapeseed extract to one of ours who had a flat sarcoid sbout 2" around, and within a year it disappeared and never came back. And, we tried the same treatment for another horse with a little rough lumpy sarcoid in his ear, and it did not make a difference. He still has the sarcoid.

I mean they asked for a supplement, that’s what my friend used. Did it make a difference? No idea. I dont like buying expensive supplements. But she liked it and still uses their other stuff, so if OP wants something to try, there is an option.

There is a lot of anecdotal support for feeding turmeric to horses for sarcoids ( and other issues). There is a Facebook page that has spun-off of Turmeric Users Group called Sarcoid Trial moderated by Dr. Doug English (veterninarian) who is conducting both feed-through use of turmeric and solutions made with turmeric. It may be something you could try. Certainly very inexensive. Mostly likely falls in the random range of working for some but not others, but can’t hurt at least.
I am feeding my horse a couple Tsp of turmeric now for sarcoids and other benefits, I have only had him a couple months, so haven’t noticed anything yet, but at least no new growth. I eat turmeric in the form of golden paste and definately see anti-inflamitory benefits myself… I know there’s debate on turmeric as well… this is FWIW !!

I had a mare with sarcoids that would not go away. One was surgically removed and frozen, then I tried xterra, then topical chemotherapy. Nothing worked and the xterra and chemo made it look like raw hamburger and she was miserable. It was a large cauliflower like growth inside her eat. There was another on the other ear that was round and smooth and actually made her more miserable than the other one. I had that one removed and started her on Hilton Herbs immunity blend. They also had a cream called Ditton, which had a name change but I can’t remember what it’s called now. She didn’t mind me putting the cream on and it didn’t irritate the sarcoid like the other things did. The one that was removed did not come back. the cauliflower-like one eventually just fell out and it had long roots that came with it. It took a few months but it was the best/easiest solution to the problem. HH has a person on hand who can help you with finding the correct supplement for what you need.

I used xterra and it took 3 courses to have the sarcoid fall off with the root. It bled and cracked and scabbed over a lot. It got huge (silver dollar sized) and very irritated at one point. Had to have a vet release to show since it was oozing at times and used Wonder Dust at the show to stop any bleeding. Had to go through the hamburger process to get it down to good healthy flesh. My horse tolerated the application well hence the 3 rounds of treatment. I was told of the mushroom supplement and read up on alternative supplement treatments as much as possible - they’re out there and success is anecdotal. Luckily we didn’t have to go through any other therapies and he now has a heart shaped scar lol.

We’re doing imiquimod cream for a sarcoid that is between my horse’s butt cheeks. Two weeks into the cream, the sarcoid is less than half of the original size. He is very raw and swollen all around the sarcoid, but the cream is working. The sarcoid is in such a hard place to reach that the vet said any surgical removal would have to be under general anesthesia.

My 5 year old OTTB Developed a pea sized sarcoid earlier this month. Thanks to the 1bigpercheron’s post Ik went to the sarcoid trial FB page. I made the “Golden Paste” (feed turmeric anyway). Used paste for 6 days. Yesterday most of the sarcoid was gone…
