Saving almost dried up Magic Cushion

Help! I have a tub 3/4 full of Magic Cushion that is partially dried out. It still sticks to its self but wanted nothing to do with sticking to my horse’s hoof and was harder than normal in the container. Since its almost a completely full large tub I would like to try to save it. I was thinking maybe mixing water or betadine into it to loosen it up a bit but I don’t want it to get runny. Any ideas?

No ideas, but I empathize, as this happened to mine too. I ended up throwing it out (which made me almost cry considering it’s not cheap!).

The ingredients are listed as turpentine, iodine, rosin, and natural leather fiber (), with the latter two being inactive ( source - https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/magic-cushion-hoof-packing-7151). Rosin is what’s left of resin from trees after you evaporate off the volatile stuff (source - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosin). None of that is particularly water-soluble, so I’d try a relatively safe organic solvent, maybe turpentine itself, or what ever the solvent is that used as a replacement. Here’s the MSDS for turpentine which notes to avoid skin contact - http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9925375.

Whatever you do I’d try a small sample.

You could contact the company and see if they have any suggestions.

This happened to me once a long time ago, and I think what I did was I added some mineral oil and a few drop of water to the jar and mushed it around with my hands?

I added Venice turpentine to mine when that happened. It sort of worked, but was messy to do.

Thanks guys! I am going to try the turpentine as I think that is is what got separated from it - it “leaked” in my trailer last summer :o
