Sawdust - and how to keep it out of my house

I’m using bagged shavings right now. Even using the fine sawdust, I find it always gets on my socks and tracks it’s way into my house.

I don’t have a great place for a delivery of sawdust from a sawmill but I’m considering giving up a corner of my small indoor until I can build a little sawdust shed. Are there tricks to avoid it sticking to everything? And the smaller stuff from the sawmill is less “sticky” right? It’s been a while that I’ve been somewhere that didn’t use bags. Will muck boots help me stay sawdust free? I usually do paddock boots or sneakers. Any other tricks?

Thanks!

dear, Your stalls need cleaning …could work.

We use medium flake bagged shavings and pellets which are not being wetted (we have one gelding whose name is going to be changed to Mr Peebody) … I really do not have any shaving attaching themselves to me.

also as Simkie noted below, I take the barn shoes off before entering the house, they stay in the garage

What kind of shoes are you wearing? Do you take them off when you come inside? How far is the barn from the house?

I do pellets, which break down into sawdust. It doesn’t stick, for the most part, but I do track it out of the chicken coop sometimes. I’ve gotten in the habit of tapping my toes on the doorframe to knock it off.

Leather shoes could maybe help, or a less aggressive sole, or purposefully walking through the grass back to the house, or even giving yourself a brush off before walking through the door?

I always wear tall muck boots to clean stalls. I find that if I wear sneakers, Mudruckers , or any shoe that is below ankle, the shavings get stuck to my socks or go into my sneakers, which drives me crazy!
These are the ones I have, which are great:

I wear sneakers or paddock boots and the barn is probably 150 feet (though grass) from the house. The shavings really gets stuck to my socks, so I am taking shoes and socks off at door.

I’m going to get a pair of muck boots, but I wondered if switching from bagged shavings would help. I swear these are worse than the truckloads of shavings I’ve used in the past.

Sorry for the silly post, but I just cleaned the whole house. Trying to keep it that way for a bit! 😂

My socks collect shavings, too. On good weather days, I take my shoes off on the deck and brush off my socks. Otherwise, I brush off my socks before i leave the barn, and then I take my shoes off inside the house. I keep a towel down over the doormat inside the back door, and it catches most of the litter I miss. It’s never ending.

In the summer when I do chores wearing ankle height boots this is a problem. Mr. Trub will take a broom to his shoes/socks to get stuff off of them.

It is not a problem in the winter when wear taller boots with my pants tucked inside. Well, not a problem on my socks. I somehow manage to get bedding stuck to my fleece vest more frequently that seems logically possible.

In my world…pet hair and shavings are decor.

We enter the house through the garage / basement after doing barn work. We have a large brush in the garage that we use to sweep off any visible debris - sawdust, hay, grass, hair. Then we change shoes / boots in the basement and put on house shoes that never go to the barn. This system captures 95% of the debris. The odd bits that do get in are easy to spot and sweep up. And yes, we do wear higher topped boots for mucking stalls.

I find the main culprit are my pants! They wrinkle and hide bits and pieces. Like ShotenStar I have an entrance thru our carport with a brush stop - just a dandy brush  I leave my shoes out there and give myself a quick dandy brush (socks n lower legs). I find no matter what shoes / boots i get hay and sawdust on myself. I mean to get one of those little stick vacs for near the entrance but so far have not bothered.

Sawdust is no different than shavings as far as sticking to your socks. If you have enough of it stuck to you as to make it through-out your whole house, well I am wondering if you need a new stall cleaning technique??

Laugh.
I wish it was that easy.

I can go out into the barn and just step into a stall to dump grain into a bucket and end up with shavings stuck to my socks.

Shaving and saw dust like to travel and socks are an easy way to do it.

In the summer I wear Noble Outfitters boots (similar to Muck boots) that look a bit like paddock boots. Since the ankle area is narrow it keeps me from getting shavings on my socks. It also keeps me from getting hay down in my boots, which seems to be a problem for me. I also take my boots off and leave them in my mud room.

Happens with grass, too, after mowing or weed whipping. I just brush myself off with my hands or a dandy brush. When I forget, you can clearly see where I traveled through the house haha

Low traction footwear that comes above your ankle.

This at your doorway.

And, bagged bedding is about the same WRT sticking to clothing vs bulk sawdust. Bagged flake bedding will break down so the smaller pieces will stick to softer fabrics like socks etc. Sawdust will stick to everything.

Last suggestion: Keep a battery powered blower at your barn exit and blow yourself off before leaving the barn.

To add to @Fin01, Home Depot has/had a deal going where if you buy their 2pack of the 4ah Ryobi batteries with the charger you get a free tool up to a 79dollar value! Your HD has to have it in stock though. I tried to do it online for a shop fan for my stalls n couldn’t. I had to just buy the fan instore but they gave me 10 bucks off. We already have one battery for the weedwacker so I steal that one for now lol.
