say no to Ellen DeGeneres support of HSUS

thanks to Diane C on FOL for the alert.

Ellen Degeneres is doing an online auction to raise funds for HSUS.
Please let her and her staff know how misguided this is!

How is it misguided? I don’t know much about HSUS as I am from Canada…

Why is this misguided?

The Humane society is a good org - it may not be perfect but it is better than nothing - what is the problem?

Here you go: http://activistcash.com/organization_overview.cfm/oid/136

They support animal terrorists (Animal Liberation Front), don’t support animal welfare but support animal rights and while using cute puppies & kittens on their fund raising efforts, actually don’t support any pounds or rescue facilities.

Bad news…equally gullible is Rush Limbaugh on the other end of the spectrum from Ellen DeGeneres…as Lenin called such people, “Useful Idiots”.

What’s good about them? They do nothing for animal welfare. They are a lobby group with 113 million in assets, yet cry poormouth.

They want to ban all hunting and fishing, they want to eliminate livestock and promote the vegen lifestyle, their President wants to see an end to companion animals…I don’t call that a “good org”.

It’s important not to confuse HSUS with local humane societies. There is no connection, and the local ones (some of which are very VERY good) get no support from the HSUS machine. If you think they are a good organization (I do NOT), at least make sure you know exactly what they are – and are not.

useful idiots

Great Line and oh so true!

Was Ellen the one who got in hot water for rehoming a rescue animal?

Well, I have been following the Nebraska200 rescue and I tend to disagree with you. The HSUS has stepped up to the plate and has been helping non stop for about 3 weeks now.

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages/?msg=36607.1

They have been bringing volunteers and have been caring for the horses non stop alongside Jerry Finch (Habitat for Horses). There may be some causes they support that I don’t, but I can only be supportive of this endeavour.
http://www.hsus.org/ see the video at the bottom of the page.

Most of you are again going to say this is just a “photo op”, but I see the results on the horses. Without their support, the horses would still be in a very bad situation.

A consumer rights organization? What is this, Life, liberty and the pursuit of low, low prices? I have my issues with HSUS too, largely over where how it spends its money and its tendency to mislead donors, but the hissies people have over it - ooh, the HSUS is coming for your pets! - is silly.

are you SURE that HSUS is actually “helping” ??? they are master’s at stepping in front of a camera to create an impression of being involved. This is exactly what they did with the “rescue” of Mouse at the Inaugural parade. I know from first-hand witnesses that they were in no way involved, they just created a video and somehow convinced the LA Times to link to its on their website (discussed on this forum in Jan '09)

I’m sorry but I do think that the HSUS is doing some good things. Are they perfect - well what organization is? But, they are bring some attention to some pretty nasty things that happen to animals - puppy mills, veal calves raised on iron-deficient milk in small boxes, the way downed cows are treated, etc. etc. And they are working to help them.

I looked at the activist link referenced above and found it to be a rather incorrect and one-sided view of things.

From my point of view, I think the HSUS it trying help the situation and I do support them. Also, don’t get them confused with PETA which is more radical group.

I don’t support any group that touts animal rights as opposed to animal welfare.

The HSUS has the same agenda as PETA, but appears to be more legitimate. Their goal is the same; to wipe out all domestic ownership and breeding of any animal, including meat animals.

Don’t confuse them with the ASPCA, which is an animal welfare organization.

I love it when people decide an org is bad without knowing the facts.

Is HSUS poor? No certainly not, they have a large financial safety net. HOWEVER, they do disperse MILLIONS of dollars each year to animal rescue and rehab organizations. They also spend MILLIONS in legal representation on Animal welfare and rights pursuits.

Each has their own mind to determine what or what is not a worthy cause for them HOWEVER please at least know a little about the org before you attack them.

If you want to know WHO has been the beneficiary of HSUS finances via grants and donations PLEASE read their financial statements which can be found online through their website. They also must provide financial statements to those who requests them per Federal law based on their filing status. There is a detailed list of organizations (including contact information) and amounts that have received HSUS money.

Hmmm again, take a visit to both the PETA site and the HSUS site and compare. The agenda of both organizations are not the same.

FYI- here’s a direct link to their finanical statements and more information:

In this case, yes, I do believe they are helping. They are the manpower on site. Read fugly’s report as well. She is one of their volunteers and was there for a whole week helping.

will do, thanks!

Another supporter of HSUS. Some of the claims posted here regarding their supposed agenda to eliminate pet ownership is simply… ridiculous!

Like others have stated, before making these outrageous claims, read their website, read their financial reports and make your own decision.

Me thinks the OP’s agenda is specific and pointed regarding their preferred sport of hunting vs. any threat HSUS has towards livestock or pet owners!
