Seabiscuit Genetic Line

not far from ridgewood ranch, the place of seabiscuit’s retirement, i have a pretty little bay mare, a seabiscuit descendant. she is a registered quarter horse, 14 hands, smart, sweet and saucy. sometime in the next year i will look for someone to love and take care of her in her retirement. if i could, i would keep her for the rest of her life.

After reading this thread yesterday, I hopped onto Pedigree Query and Equibase to do a little digging on a horse from the 50s. In tracking her daughters, I found one by Windy Sea, a California stallion whose broodmare sire was Seabiscuit. I started going through Equibase searching for progeny and added many that were not on PQ.

It always surprises me how many horses are not in the PQ database and I like to add whenever I can. One of Windy Sea’s daughters whom I looked up, Windy’s Daughter, was quite successful (MG1SW) and spent her career as a broodmare in KY. I would bet that she lives on in some modern horses.

I was hoping to donate my Seabiscuitx2 mare to the ranch so they could continue the line since she had him in her lineage twice, but they turned her down!

Your post reminded me of the book “The Secretariat Factor” which was published back in 1978 about Secretariat’s first foal crop. Windy’s Daughter was among the mares bred in that first season. She produced Centrifolia, who was the dam of Shergar’s Best, who sired quite a few foals in the USA through 2002.

Beyond their ability, or inability, to run at the track, some horses obtain a cult factor. Biscuit’s was that in an era of depression he lifted a country’s spirits, where everyone could have a piece of him, not just the elite. He was the little horse with a not quite straight leg who could run on sheer heart and he was needed at that time. Since then the books, movies, etc. have carried on the legend.

I like to do this, too, but I’ve never seen a progeny list at Equibase. Where is it?

I think you can get access to stallion progeny if you subscribe. There is free access to a mare’s progeny. To access, don’t enter a horse name in the search field or leave it blank and press Enter.

A screen will come up with two messages,
