Seabiscuit Genetic Line

I have been a fan of Seabiscuit before the movie and the book came along; mainly because I have a slight personal connection to the story. I am a fan of studying genetics and lineage and thought it would be neat to go through and see if any ancestors are still racing today. I would love to own a relative, someday, but I don’t think it’s currently in the cards. I did the best research that I could and I am sure I am missing a few but if you are interested; feel free to keep reading. these are the most recent born who are direct descendants.

Have you read Seabiscuit - the Rest of the Story by Bill Nichols?

http://www.foaltoyearlinghalter.com/story-of-seabiscuit.html

With only 108 foals and short sire life, he only produced a couple of talented runners. Not to say that he wasn’t a fascinating racehorse.

yes, he produced only a few talented runners. Looks like many of his original foals and their offspring went unraced or had very, very short racing careers (under 5 starts) and were then bred. this was back in the 50’s and 60’s. Side note; his son was the horse who starred as his sire in the Shirley temple film. He was only alive for about 7 years from retirement until his death. Charles Howard passed away shortly after the horse. What happened to his stable of horses, I don’t really know. But many of Seabiscuit’s daughters and sons fell off the map or had minimal offspring and their genetic lines quickly ended.

I would like to think Biscuit might’ve had more success if he had a better book of mares to service but being in California and only breeder mares that C.H. owned; his gene pool was limited.

With that being said there were two granddaughters of Seabiscuit who were both sired by NOOR. All Dressed Up and Shamvara (Out of Dressed Up by Seabiscuit and out of a mare sired by BULL DOG and out of a mare sired by SWEEP.). They produced decent racehorses for their time periods but both of their genetic lines dried up in the 70’s and 80’s. 2 very neat mares if you ask me with that type of lineage top and bottom.

He does have a few direct descendants that are very successful sport horses (one being a broodmare approved by warmblood verbands who had a highly successful show career).

All in all; most of his direct descendants stayed in California or ended up in British Columbia, Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona. I couldn’t find any registered ancestors that made it back to the east coast to race.

Supposedly there are a few direct descendants of him who are crossbred thoroughbreds so who knows where they ended up or if they produced anything as there is no pedigree tracking them at this point

I think its neat to track this sort of thing; just wish there were more still out there.

well thank you

You are amazing!!!

My mare has sea biscuit in her two times:

Sea Garden 1947 and Sea Angel 1945.

Sea Angel’s line went on to produce Final Pool, who was a Grand Prix show jumper ridden by his amateur owner in World Cup Finals at Spruce against the likes of Ian Millar and Big Ben.

And no War Admiral.

Denny Emerson had one of these in the lines of one of his broodmares - Sea Garden, I think.

These mares had very few foals.

I owned an Appy whose maternal greatgrandsire was Grog, by Hard Tack. I understand Grog was the “standin” that Seabiscuit’s trainer used to decoy clockers and keep the press away when he didn’t want Seabiscuit disturbed. My Appy’s registered name was Viking Grog.

I read somewhere that some quarter horses can be traced back to Sea Biscuit…

OP, if you ever find yourself in Northern California, Seabiscuit’s ranch can be toured. The stallion barn has been restored and there is a dining hall full of Seabiscuit memorabilia.

The ranch is quite lovely and is now host to a therapeutic riding program as well as a farm school and other initiatives.

This is true. My appendix QH eventer (born 1993) traces back to Seabisbuit through Shawne Bug. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/if+i+had+a+rider

I would say a lot of QH or appendix/crosses go back to him as a lot of his direct descendants I found are not race registered but have very QH-type names and were bred in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico.

Most of what is left of his direct lineage is either racing at the very bottom of the totem pole, have gone unraced, or are crossbreds. Seabiscuit himself was a handsome horse who would’ve suited QH breeders well, he looked great in western tack and it is no surprised to me that his direct descendants are good sport horses.

interesting side note steering off EventerAJ’s post

THe horse Spotted Shawne Bull (QH), Broadway Bus (QH), Spotted Shawn Bug (QH) are all double seabiscuit as they have SHawne both top and bottom in their pedigrees and have quite a few recent offspring!!

Well this was a neat thing to stumble across while continuing to track my horse’s relatives…who happen to all be at the very top of your list! I own Smart Little Habit  I am a huge fan of Seabiscuit and happened to be reading the book when I got my horse. His nickname is Pops like Red called Seabiscuit (I guess it was in my head from reading the book and it just stuck, I didn’t learn until a few years later that he was a descendant). He’s the same height as Seabiscuit and is far and away the most intelligent horse I have ever known. I know Seabiscuit is waaaaaay back in his pedigree but I still like to think there’s a little bit of influence in there

Imapistol has not run since May and Kat’s Quick Draw ended his career last fall with a chip in his knee. They have two half brothers that carry on the Seabiscuit line: Navajo Pistol, a 3 year old who just won at Zia Park a couple weeks ago, and an unraced 2 year old named Reining Pistol, who seems to be her last foal. Tietjen, my horse’s full brother, unfortunately broke down in his last race and was euthanized. He, Smart Little Habit and Busy Little Pistol were the only 3 foals from Busy Habit.

The reason I was inspired to do more research tonight is because I’m putting together a letter and photos to send to the man who bred and owned/owns the whole family. I want to let him know if he ever decides to sell any of these relatives to let me know and am hoping he might have some pictures of the family to share.

I obviously have a ton of photos of my horse and I also have quite a few of the rest of the family. I have a photo of Sea Gold, the daughter of Seabiscuit that the family descends from  I’d love to share pictures and maybe help you acquire one of these guys when you’re ready!

BansheeBreeze;

that is great! Glad you stumbled across this post. It seems as though there is quite a bit of Seabiscuit influence in the Quarter Horse World and his line has produced some very handsome reining horses (which is no surprise because Seabiscuit was a tidy looking horse who looked great in western tack).

Please share some photos on this thread or feel free to send them via PM!

It seems as though the Seabiscuit line on the track is dwindling but I do hope that his thoroughbred lineage goes forward through some mares that are still left.

It’s always fun to see how the lines from decades ago are doing when they aren’t the “big” ones that you can easily see survived. Especially when the stallion didn’t have many foals. Thanks for this post!

I have recently acquired a grey mare when it was abandoned on my property. She was so thin and seemed sad. She has a tattoo that indicates her name is Pure Summer. I was hoping she was related to Sea Biscuit but I couldnt find a link. I saw she has Seattle Slew, War Admiral, Bold Ruler and Man O War in her bloodline but never saw the Biscuit but I am a baby when it comes to this subject and was wondering if anyone had a better way of searching. Thanks

here is here pedigree

http://www.pedigreequery.com/pure+summer

She is a California Bred by David and Billie Farr. She had no starts on the track. No Seabiscuit in her pedigree but War Admiral does appear quite a few times but very far back

there are very few pedigreed TB’s left with Seabiscuit in their pedigree

 Snaffle you weren’t really looking for Seabiscuit’s ancestors to be running lately. I more suspect you were looking for progeny.

However you have done an amazing amount of creditable research.

I congratulate you . He ran in an era of interesting people and horses.
