Searching for a Hunt book

For two years, our Huntsman has been telling me about a book I need to read, but he can’t remember the title. Here are the specifics: it’s thick (about 2-3"), sort of a “how to” for Whips. Realizing this isn’t a lot to work with, I’ve researched Google and Amazon with no luck. I’ve done searches for books on this forum…nothing.

So, if anyone has any search tips please pass them along. I’ve exhausted my search!

Maybe Dennis Foster’s “Whipper-In: The Art & Science of Whipping-In”

Cheaper version here - http://www.mfha.org/shop-books.html

Saw it at the Middleburg Tack Exchange last week

Dennis’ book is good, but I am sure he will forgive me if I recommend my personal favorites: Beckford’s Thoughts On Hunting and Comte de Vezins’ Hounds for a Pack.

Random googles:

http://books.google.com/books/about/Thoughts_on_hunting.html?id=FlcCAAAAYAAJ

And both available on Amazon, I see.

There are a number of others. It is late so don’t get me started…

But really. Hounds for a Pack is a tiny little book that does speak volumes in understanding pack dynamics. And of course my favorite part of Beckford is where he notes that if you have to pick one, a knowledgeable and capable whipper-in is more valuable than the huntsman. As a whipper-in, one carries this thought in one’s head and does not fear the inevitable mess-up and wrath of huntsman…

And don’t forget Joseph B Thomas’ Foxhunting in America - maybe not as much about whipping, but about breeding, line, scent, etc etc etc. The reprint is actually better than the (expensive) first/limited edition.

A MUST read for every foxhunter.

Two good websites to try for older books are alibris

and abe books.

I have found some cool out of print horseman’s books on these. They let independant booksellers list books from all over the world. I once got a bio of Captain Mark Philips from Australia as a joke for a friend.

Hey, thanks everyone. I’ll check them out.

Found it!

The book is Dennis Foster’s “Whipper In”. Fantastic information and some has hit so close to home, I laugh out loud.

You can also set up a search on eBay that will email you when a copy comes up–great way to find all sorts of things. Amazon will do the same, on Amazon, you can instruct the search to purchase it for you as soon as it comes up, you set the max price, book condition, etc…

“Whipper In” is an outstanding book. Ought to be required reading for staff and field members, even old hands. It never hurts to remind ourselves how much is expected of staff, and why we need to not only appreciate them, but be understanding when tempers flare or feelings get hurt.

Sometimes I think its the old hands who need it more than the newbies. We never know it all and a refresher is a good thing.
