Searching for a simple saddle, why can I not find any?

Hi,

I am searching for a used western saddle, I have google’d
“used western saddle” and all that comes up are listings from ebay.com and advertisements for saddle companies/tack shops with out their inventory online. Or the adds are for companies that just sell new saddles, with prices of $2,995 and up for a good quality, this reminds me why I need a pre owned saddle.

I do need a small size, Santa might be dropping of my daughters new show horse this year, so we really need two saddles. I have seen a ton of children showing, do they keep their saddles forever?

Long story short, I need a 13" Western Pleasure, show saddle, lots of silver, light oil, good quality.

I would be great full for any websites that have pre-owned western saddles.

Thank you.

Have you tried horsesaddleshop.com? They have a large inventory online. There are some others mentioned within this forum, as well.

One of the tack stores where I live (CA) has gobs of used saddles in kid sizes. Are you close to any large tack stores that take used saddles in on consignment?

Everybody’s looking for a saddle.

Tack trader can be good, Harris and Blue ribbon usualy have the small seat sizes (used and new, but you pay for the quality).

Thank you Hermein and aqhadreamer, I will look on tack trader. There are no tack shops locally to me that carries western saddles, we are basically left ebay and ‘a friend of a friend has’.

Does the tack shop in CA has a website? Maybe I can contact them with what I am looking for, I live in MA but have purchased from CA and the rest of the country before, IMO if you know what you want, distance does not matter.

Thank you.

Are they trainers locally that you could ask if they have some students growing up with smaller saddles for sale?

Many of the horse for sale web sites also have tack for sale.

We get them in occasion. I have a new Alamo light oil on sale from $900 to $500. You can add your own bling.

There are no local trainers with something in my price range or want (some qualities are horrible!) I know I cannot get something perfect for her, but decent is all I ask and there is nothing around here. I cannot add my own silver, I was in a motorcycle accident and lost a lot of the use in my right hand. (and I don’t know how good I would be at it anyway, lol)

I looked at your website the other day! Great selection and really wish I was looking for myself. If you do not have the above available, I also need a pre-owned (She is not heavy enough to break in a new) Close contact hunt saddle (square back of the saddle seat, not round) with normal knee rolls 15-3/4" . Or no knee rolls if it would save us some money. I don’t like them, just seems like every one wants them now-a-days. I have a budget of $500 each and only one per month. Preferably the hunt seat first. She is not showing until Spring.

Thank you for all your help.

If you are in MA, have you tried contacting Allie’s Tack Shop in Rhode Island? I’ve never bought from or worked with them, but on Equinesite, the New England BB, Steve from Allie’s gets rave reviews for fitting Western saddles.

The other place to try is Double G in Lebanon (very southern), Maine. They have a huge inventory of both new and used western saddles. They don’t show them individually on their website, but if you call and talk with them, they will check their inventory based on what you need and call you back.

http://www.doublegtack.com/

Double G won’t ship saddles to try, but they will be helpful in letting you know if it’s worth a trip. And, if you want, you can haul your horse there and they will help you fit a saddle.

Are you checking Craigslist? Sometimes stuff shows up on there. Also check with local pony clubs and 4H groups.

Harris… usualy have the small seat sizes (used and new, but you pay for the quality

If the OP is balking at $2995 for a new saddle in general, I don’t think Harris is something the OP is going to want to consider! The 13" new Harris Youth show saddle on their site right now is $7,000+

ETA: I would balk at this price too, OP!

You can also find some nice used saddles on facebook groups specific to selling horse show items.

cmdrcltr, I LOVE Double G tack shop, what a great selection of new and pre owned saddles and everything for huntseat/western/trail/dressage, love it there. I will try Allie’s too, as I am not going to be up to Double G until the spring, thank you.

SuckerForHorses, yes I wish I had that kind of money for a saddle!! Even if I did, I would still purchase pre-owned. I have been checking the groups, but everyone seems like they want to make a buck or do not return messages, this is why I like working with shops or craigslist adverts with phone numbers (aside from email only). Thank you for your reply.

The tack store I mentioned doesn’t put any of their saddles on their website. In fact, I was in there the other day (looking for a saddle), and the owner said that she doesn’t really keep track of what’s brought in on consignment–I can understand that because they must have at least a hundred stacked up in there. I think they do this as a courtesy to their customers, rather than as an income source.

Sorry I didn’t see that she was only looking to spend $500 until recently. I’ve seen used Harris’s for $1,500 (used and dark, but still usable). I’ve bought a used Wenger for $800…

Rick’s Heritage Saddlery has some decent small saddles english saddles might be worth a peek at their website

www.horseclicks.com is where I found my saddle. I was super picky on brand and bar size, and seat size. Well, picky on everything. Within a month I found mine. I paid $390 including shipping for a super nice used Tex Tan.
