Searching for the Best Schooling Pad

Hi all,

I’m hoping someone can help me find a brand or a place to go for my favorite schooling pad or something similar that I absolutely cannot find anywhere.

I got this in about 2005 so unfortunately any brand that may have been printed on the tag has long ago been washed out. It’s a square quilted pad, measures an odd 33” x 23” when laid out flat (16 1/2 inch drop from center when folded). The quilted squares are small (1”) and looks just like a typical baby pad but is a bit thicker and is not so long that it needs to be folded over in the front. It’s a completely plain pad, no girth straps or anything. It NEVER bunches up or slides down, even with zero contour. I hope this is a good enough description to be pointed in the right direction bc I absolutely love this pad!

I really like not using the thinner traditional baby pads as they tend to slip and bunch on my broad shouldered but high withered horse. This is so picky but I also like the drop to be short so that my saddle flap ends slightly below the pad (I don’t know why I prefer that look but it’s so hard to find pads that comply…)

So, with that, does anybody know of something close to what I’m looking for?

Thank you!

Can you post a photo?

Not sure if this is the pad you have (hard to say without a photo) but my personal favorite pads are the Ogilvy pads. They have baby pads and jumper profile pads - both are fantastic and don’t move.

The Wilkers baby pads are on sale at Farmvet and sound fairly similar to what you’re describing.

I have to second the Oglivy pads. They aren’t exactly what you’re saying, but they’re thicker than a normal baby pad and they don’t slip at all. They have a soft material on the inside (I don’t even know how to describe it, SO soft, never leaves rubs) and some contour to them. The baby pads are also a bit longer than a usual saddle pad, but it hasn’t caused any problems for me! I use the baby pads, but I have friends who have had just as much success with the profile pads. They also do tend to leave a little room at the bottom, depending on your half pad situation.

Agree with Ogilvy for all of these reasons. Not “schooling” priced in my opinion, but worth it. Love the material, quality, and how they stay put.

Another recommendation for Ogilvy. I was gifted one from a barn mate when she moved to another state. For some reason she couldn’t keep it under her saddle. I have not had this issue and love it. Doesn’t slip. Love the high wither contour. I’m seriously tempted to go out and pay for another one.

Even though the Ogilvy products are pricy, they are super durable (in addition to all the other good qualities listed above!) I have a bunch in my rotation that are 5+ years old, having been laundered after every use, and they still look brand new and come out of the washer sparkling clean. They wear like iron! Well worth the cost IMO!

I appreciate everyone giving me the suggestion for the Ogilvy! I wrote it off initially because of price and I would only use this for schooling, but I like the look and it seems to closely fit the dimensions I’m looking for. Now it’s hard not to want to buy one plus splurge on some custom colors!

Thanks!

I was going to say Ogilvy as well. I don’t own one (yet) but we have one floating around the barn laundry room that I try to use whenever I can it—it NEVER moves and has just enough cushion.

Absolutely this. I have three that I rotate through. FYI I ride 4-5 days a week. The whites aren’t quite as white, but they wear so well. Cheaper pads you’ll ultimately end up discarding after a year or so because they don’t hold up to a lot of wear and tear, but the Ogilvys, some way some how, are really made to last. To me it’s worth the extra money to have something that is gonna last you 3+ years, particularly if you price out the cost of use per ride.

Just to post an alternative as I also love Ogilvy, I also do love Toklat Classics III pads. They are high quality and long lasting.

Could it be a PRI pad? I still have several from years ago, and love them!

I also like Wilker’s, Dura-Tech from Schneider’s (though mine is an older version than the current ones), Roma, Waldhausen, Lettía, and certain Dover pads.
