Seat of saddle is too hard

I’m looking to buy a used older county saddle that fits the horse and I well and is very affordable. I can really feel my seat bones, but the seat seems like it is a little too hard and I’m used to well padded seats. This is the first saddle that is really fitted to me since I’ve always ridden in other people’s saddles that were too big for me so I wasn’t sure if this is a normal thing. It’s like I’m sitting on a hard chair and if I shift my weight, I can feel my seat bones move back and forth.

Other than getting a thinline seat saver, is there a way to add padding to the seat for my comfort?

I tried out another saddle that is .5" too big, is a little more $, and needs to be reflocked. It feels a little more comfortable, and while I can feel my seat bones pretty well, i don’t feel them as much as I do in the county.

Padded breeches and the right type of underwear really helps. Depending on the saddle, some saddlers can add padding to the seat.

And here I thought that you were having trouble learning to ride gaited horses.

(You might want to change the title to read, “seat of saddle is too hard”.

I also have an old (1985) County Competitor with a rock hard seat. So far I am just dealing with it, but I sometimes even get sore spots between my inner seatbones and the skin. A seat cover would be too thick, I think. I like the idea of padded breeches/underwear, and might have to give that a try. It might pad the area just enough for more comfort without sacrificing feel.

I’d spend the extra $$$ and get the more comfortable saddle as long as it can be flocked to fit the horse.
Riding in an uncomfortable saddle is awful even for a couple of rides. You don’t want to be in pain for multiple rides every week. Week after week. Year after year…

Its not worth buying any saddle that’s not comfy. One problem is the hurt is eventually mess up your seat or posture by avoiding the pain.

he older County saddles were hard in the seat. The newer ones fit about the same but of course cost more. Can’t say my old hard one ruined my seat But my seat is happy with the newer one. Spoiled seat.

LOL. Glad your hiney is so happy LOL.

Ive had hard saddles that were comfy if you sat in the position it wanted you to. I have an ultra deep ultra padded saddle 1/2 inch longer than the size I need and it feels like perfection. Try a bunch of saddles until you find the right one. You should enjoy the ride!

If it’s the perfect saddle, you can have the seat leather replaced and have a layer of cushion added. It will probably run you around $600. Saving the original leather is unlikely since the cushion would require more space, but if not it may not cost so much.

I have a thin line seat saver that needs a new home
