seat savers

My old seat bones are starting to complain on the trail and am thinking of a seat saver for my English saddle. What are the pros and cons of a gel or closed cell seat saver?

Pro: You may be more comfortable. Con: Your tush will be hot/sweaty. It will change the way you sit in the saddle so it feels strange until you get used to it.

Will both types make my tush hot and sweaty? Or one more than the other.

Sheepskin might be a good option as they tend to breath better.

Gel and closed cell foam provide the best shock absorption but they do not breathe at all. Whether that’s an issue depends on a lot of factors including how prone you are to sweat. They’re easily cleaned, so if you don’t mind getting sweaty in your crotch and tush, it’s not a big deal. The sheepskin ones breathe somewhat and are less likely to cause sweating but they don’t provide as good shock absorption.

I am completely in love with my Heather Moffet Seatbone Saver. I got mine from Just Equis. It is expensive, but worth every penny. I love it so much that I bought one to take on my Iceland riding tour 2 years ago. Horse items entering the country have to be new to prevent disease entry. I later ended up giving it to a friend for Christmas since I didn’t need two. I’m going back to Iceland to ride again this August. I can’t afford another new seat saver, but I nearly go into panic mode with just the thought of not having it for 6 days in the saddle.

I scored a Mattes sheepskin on ebay for a steal. I love it!

thanks everyone for your imput
