Secretariat movie, a dissapointment - Sorry but thats the way I feel

it should have been called the “Penny Chenery family drama story” and the gospel music at the end instead of showing that MAGICAL race was just too much.

they left out most of Chick’s call at the Belmont. which was filmed at Keeneland.

Im a HUGE Sec. fan. I was around the age of 10 back then and Secretariat was my personal hero. I know way too many details I guess.

it seems all the “Secretariat (horse) details” were overlooked and replaced with Penny’s daughter marching in protest… or weird physco dancing outside the barn… I guess. and it made Sham AND his owner out to be villains (NOT TRUE) Sham was a WONDERFUL horse

and where the heck was Riva?

so, many things just wrong about this movie

sigh, I guess I expected more true history, I was let down

Im so sorry, but, I was :frowning:

Gospel music? Really?
I’ll be honest and say I never really planned on seeing it anyway - the Disney tag scared me off, as did the whole “underdog” angle in the trailer.

Secretariat: MUCH better than the movie

No offense, but its a Disney movie. Come on.

has “Disney” done other movies that have been about the title of the movie?

Dreamer was actually better, and so was Seabiscuit

after all, the movie IS called: “Secretariat”… NOT: “Secretariats, Owners, daughters march in peace protests…”

and to leave Riva out is just… wrong… and to make Sham out to be the “bad guy”… just wrong

and to burst into gospel music and distort the Belmont… just plain wrong.

my boyfriend said: “it seems like horse and human parts were done separately, then just ducked taped together”

im really sorry if others liked it. I kind of like the movie too, as I would ANY pointless “entertainment” movie. and will probably see it again, and own it…

but, I have to post my opinion… I was just disappointed that my HERO, the horse that has been my passion since I can remember, was so poorly portrayed.

The thing that I wonder about is what the hell are they trying to achieve with this movie at this time? Are they trying to draw new fans, siphon off money from big money women for the racing industry, hire new psychologists at the track? what? Hollywood generally has a political purpose which would be even more intense under the current economic debacle unfolding “the recession, or hyperinflation” or whatever the psychological warfare gang in the media/Hollywood want to call it. I have to admit, I wonder what is the purpose since it is so far from the truth and downright psychotic to boot. Thanks for the heads up. I absolutely will not denigrate the memory of Secretariat for this bunch of garbage.

Thank you Jumpin_Horses for the dose of the real thing. Does anyone know if all of these five parts are available on one DVD?

Have not seen the movie, and probably won’t but just finished the book. I found the book interesting, not great. It seemed to jump around a bit timewise, I maybe learned more about old bloodlines than I needed to, and it seemed that there was just endless quoting of times for each and every furlong that he ever ran.

BIG Question, which was not answered in the book…How/why did he get laminitis? I knew that was why he was put down, but my aging memory has forgotten the initial cause or maybe I never knew to begin with…

I’ll definitely go - but with low expectations since it is a Disney horse movie.
Like the Horse Whisperer, the people who make these movies are not horse people and their mistakes really show. I like the movies that show real footage the best.

He was terribly fat, so not surprising he got laminitis.

Did anyone complain about the stupidity of the portrayal of War Admiral and his connections in Seabiscuit? (Besides me, I mean.)

It’s kind of ironic, because Equus Magazine had an article about obese horses back in the 70’s and they used a confo picture of Secretariat (in great shape), with a “see through” page that was an overlay to show what he would look like obese. Not sure if anyone recalls seeing that article.

Yes, I remember. When he died, he looked a lot like the altered photo in the very fat issue. I think they did it as a series over several issues.

Does the word “Thyroid” come to mind…

IDK, are you saying he had a thyroid condition? I dont know for sure what happened… but, I speculate obesity, Insulin Resistance.

We know SO much more about these things these days. but, back then, we just didnt know. Honestly, its kind of crazy that a field of green grass can kill a horse. but, I think its more a sign of the times than anything. Horses just arent “WORKED” like they used to be.

when I was a kid, our horses had a very modest diet, mostly grass (rich green grass) but, they worked their butts off 7 days a week. they were the fittest animals ive ever known.

For sure, it is noted that: Secretariat had a HUGE appetite, probably due to his huge heart causing lightening fast metabolic rate, when he was fit. I speculate they continued to feed him like the days when he was “fit”, yet, stopped exercising him the same way.

so, perhaps it wasnt the grassy pastures, or the molasses dripping, covered sweet feed, (which IMO should NOT ever be fed, but, thats just me) as much as it was lack of full time work that was the real culprit. IDK, just a thought

Just my opinion, or thoughts, I REALLY dont know for sure.

I don’t know… I could be totally wrong… but I suspect their motive is to make money by entertaining people, possibly.

Actually the word “overfeeding” comes to mind.

:lol::lol::lol:

AND “under worked”

the staredown

the movie seemed to just be made as a “feel good” tribute and was overtly disney-ized- but i still found it enjoyable.

however- i laughed out loud during the two scenes where they try to make it look like secretariat and sham have this horse to horse stare down… once it’s when they arrive at the track and once it’s in the start gate. i just found it really funny.

Hey, if Zenyatta can do it mid-race in real life…

 I have a sneaking suspicion you’re right about their dastardly plan! (And as a Walt Disney Co. shareholder I wish them every possible success.)

Thank you! Although I did enjoy the movie as a whole, I was very upset about that aspect of it - so totally untrue!
