Seeking Double R Leather Co. Saddle Information

Hi all!

I’m an English rider so western saddles are definitely not my area of expertise. Back in 1994 when my parents bought me my first horse my dad bought himself a barely used western saddle for playing around on said horse since horse started out western before being turned English. Anyways, saddle has not been ridden in much and has spent most of the time sitting around in the house nicely covered.

Now that I am trying to help my dad sell it I’m having trouble finding information on the brand or figuring out a value on it. The saddle has Double R leather Co. on it along with what I believe is a serial number and no other stampings. Saddle has a decent amount of silver accents.

Any suggestions on where to get more information on this kind of saddle or who to go to for information on what it’s worth and the best avenue for selling it? Seems like they would be very expensive to mail versus an English saddle. Thanks in advance!

I’ve never heard of Double R. Did a Google search and nothing really came up.

Usually the serial number should at least tell you what year the saddle was made.

Depending on your shipper, it will be around $100 to ship a Western saddle because the box needs to be so large.

Can you post pictures of the saddle?

They were out of Chattanooga if I am not mistaken, but I believe they have gone out of business. Best sitting western saddle I have ever had was a Double R, but it was much older than yours.

Right, out of Chattanooga, also known as Red Ranger saddles, out of business since the 70s I think. I never sat in one but heard good things about them.

There is a ‘what’s it worth?’ column in Western Horseman magazine, maybe it’s worth trying to contact the gentleman who writes that column (he has a business somewhere in Colorado) to give you leads on how to value it. With a serial number he could likely tell you how to find out more.

Well the serial number is 1834 so I don’t think it’s telling me the year there. The saddle is in such great shape it’s hard to even imagine it could be from the 70’s or before!

I need to get some better pictures of it next time I go to my parents but here is a dropbox link to a shot of it on a horse (warning English rider in a western saddle, lol) and a close up of the name and serial number.

Beverley - I will see if I can find the name of gentleman you mention in the magazine or some other business that does used saddles just feel like I’m searching wrong since I’m not getting many hits versus what I can find for English saddles!

Thanks for the help guys!
