Seeking flood damage advice

My basement was recently flooded when our sump pump stopped working during a power outage. We’re now emptying out the basement and are preparing for a visit from the insurance contractor. I read that area rugs flooded with water that isn’t tap water is considered contaminated because they absorb the bacteria in the water. So our rugs are toast. What about the riding boots and horse blankets that I had on the floor of my basement tack room? Can I just clean them as usual, or are they toast too? I don’t want to wrap my horse or my feet in e.coli!

My basement just flooded as well! I think you can salvage some of this stuff! First order of business is to get ventilation and fans in the basement. Wash the blankets in water/white vinegar solution in your washing machine. If sunny outside, put them out to dry. Otherwise use the dryer. Boots get a thorough wipe down with vinegar/water. then water. then condition. Probably throw away the rugs. Preventing mold growth is your biggest obstacle- ventilation is key. We have rubber mats for our gym in the basement and I didn’t even think about it but we checked about a week after flooding and the were completely moldy underneath!! They all had to be wiped down and brought to the sun. Ugh!! Good luck-I actually feel your pain!!

Thanks so much for your advice! We got everything moved out and dehumidifiers going everywhere else, but tack room was last priority fortunately other than boots and a couple blankets, everything else was in storage totes or on shelves. I’ll try your vinegar tips!
