Seizures in Cats

Anyone ever dealt with a cat with seizures? My guy started having them 2 weeks ago, out of the blue. Blood work and x-rays are normal. Vet said most often cause is a benign brain tumor. :frowning:

I went through this about a year ago with my ragdoll. Like your cat mine didn’t have anything show up on tests.

I did a lot of research online, and ended up buying an herbal product called EaseSure, made by PetAlive.com.

My cat’s seizures stopped. I don’t know if it was a coincidence, or if the product really worked, but my cat hasn’t had a seizure in months.

I wish you all the best with your kitty. Those seizures are scary.

Thanks! I will give it a try.

Something to rule out is Thiamine (B1) deficiency. When a healthy cat seizures and all obvious environmental and pathological causes are ruled out, perhaps start looking for vitamin deficiencies. Thiamine deficiency is particularly notorious, as its hallmark is inexplicable seizures and/or neurological signs. I learned this last summer, when IAMS left Thiamine out of a batch of canned. (IAMS issued a recall, but not until many cans had been sold). My cat received daily B1 shots as well as seizure management with the phenobarb routine, finally tapering off phenobarb. He is ok now.

ETA: My cat, like yours, presented with normal bloodwork, radiographs, U/A, etc. No medical problems in his prior 8 years.

For clues, perhaps call your pet food store to see if your food has been recalled, or google for a press release from the company.

Just an idea. I hope you and your vets find the reason, and that your little buddy responds well to treatment. Best wishes!

Thanks for the advice! It is definitely something to keep in mind. Kitty is not getting better…no more seizures, but neurologically he is just not right. :frowning: Back to the vet today.

Sorry to hear this. How old is your kitty? Unfortunatley idiopathic epilepsy in cats is far more rare than in dogs, meaning a lot of the time it actually IS a brain tumor (compared to dogs, where most of the time it isnt). However, I have known a few cats to have seizure disorders and they go onto live prosperous lives. Crossing fingers for you and your kitty!!!

Thanks! Regular vet today said she doubted what he is having is seizures because of the rarity. He is having episodes of some sort though…not sure what to call it. Said it may be something with his liver. :frowning:

Was the bloodwork normal? Liver values should be increased if there is anything going on inthe liver… hepatic encephalitis from liver failure can be treatable or at least managed with ICU care - dull mentation is usually the presentation and the signalment can be any age of cat. Im really hoping your kitty can pull through this!

If she isnt already at a hospital, Id majorly keep an eye on her neurological status. If it really is an encephalitis she would likely need a manitol cri to keep the swelling down while her liver is being treated.

Poor kitty - its never easy…

I had a cat that started seizures when she was about two and had them her entire life. She lived to be about 20. For her early years the vets had her on Phenobarbitol and she was pretty drugged up. They decided when she was about six to stop all medications because they were sure she only had a few months to live.

She had seizures about once a week for the rest of her long life. Vets did not ever come up with a reason for them.

I don’t know what is going on with him. He is 11, so not too old. But yesterday I was ready to give up and let him go…he was just miserable. I decided to do some more tests and give him a little more time. He was a little perkier yesterday. This morning he was so much better…seemed back to his old self. He got some antibiotics and steroids on Sunday, maybe that is kicking in?? Bloodwork should be back today; maybe it will show what is going on. Maybe he DID get into something toxic and his system is processing it. I can’t imagine what though.

His seizure on Sunday was scary…after the seizing part was over, he was in a trance like state for a long time. He didn’t respond to any stimuli. His third eyelid was half over his eye and didn’t retract. I had to check him periodically to make sure he was still breathing. So even though I think he could live with seizures if it comes down to that, he can’t keep having these episodes.

I am just hoping this is the end of them!

Crossing fingers!!! Seizures are never fun…especially horrible ones like you described. Hopefully it was a toxin thats now out of his system!

I have seen a case of seizure induced by the discomfort of cauda equina, an arthritic /deforming of the sacrum

cat should also be screened for Toxoplasmosis using IgG IgM matched blood samples
