Selecting a Registry (Old vs West)

Is there a greater benefit to one over the other? Foal is able to be registered as either Oldenburg or Westfalen. What would be a preference for a future sale horse?

I have come to think that the Oldenburg registry is so “open” as to be an issue. Especially the NAO, unless there have been some changes in the last several years that I am unaware of. I personally would hold more value for a West. Registry when shopping.

Oldenburg - GOV or NA? GOV carries a bit more prestige than NA.

If it’s a colt/gelding, it almost doesn’t matter. Even if it’s a filly it doesn’t really matter, as she’d still need to go to breeding approval with a registry, and that’s where it would really matter.

GOV or West is a flip of a coin IMHO. ONA or West then I’d probably choose West, unless West was a pita to get to and ONA was right around the corner.

Westfalen and RPSI have joined and seems to be using the RPSI model, which is quite accepting. I’d attend the closest inspection if the option is ONA or West. I’d probably go a little further for a GOV option.

Thanks to be honest I have no idea if its NA or GOV. Its registration for a filly by Westporte out of a Canadian sport horse mare.

the other option is CSHA as both parents are registered as that.

the mare wont pass an inspection as she is 19 and unsound. However she has been used primarily for hunter breeding. Not intending to do line classes with foal just curious about registration options.

ISR/NA is one Oldenburg registry that is independent from the Oldenburger Verband and operates with its own standards. GOV is an extension of the german verband and adheres to the German registry standards and regulations.

It is generally more difficult to get a horse accepted into GOV, which is why it is typically considered more elite. If it is between GOV and Westfalen, I would do GOV. If it is ISR/NA and Westfalen, I would go Westfalen.

That said, definitely do your research on all of the above. What dam and sire are not just registered, but approved for breeding in, is going to dictate your options. (And if one/both are not approved for anywhere, then it comes down to which registries don’t require approval - I do not know CSHA regulations if that is one of them. It is very situation/registry specific, which is never a helpful answer with a convoluted topic!)
