Selling a fox hunting saddle

A friend purchased a semi-custom saddle designed for wider horses several months ago with big plans for her horse to one day become a fox-hunter. Around the same time, the horse came up lame and has since been diagnosed as only eventually being sound for light trail riding at the walk and possible trot.

TMI - but anyway, she has been trying to sell the saddle on her local Craig’s List to no avail. Is there a good site she can list on to sell this dang thing? She needs the proceeds to pay for vet bills. :frowning:

What distinguishes this saddle as merely for foxhunting ?

Coth ad question

Coth classified ad question:

I have foxhunting saddles to “re-home” as well. I looked at the coth ad section and there only seem to be tack stores. Is there a special section for us regular individuals?

My personal definition of a foxhunting saddle is one that you can comfortably hunt for 5 hours on hilly territory with 3’ jumps in odd places.

Your personal definition doesn’t really count in this situation, but a buyer’s does, and you are less likely to sell a saddle with that description. You would widen your potential market by calling it an all purpose, cross country or something other than “hunting saddle”.

Well I would certainly agree that would be the definition of a huntin’ saddle to me; as long as it’s not synthetic (horrors!)!

Whicker… PM sent.

OP- is your friend anywhere near a tack shop that does consignment? What state?

Also, the classifieds in the discussion forums have a tack section, but they are not free. However, tack seems to sell pretty well on them, so perhaps the $ is worth it.

Agree that you should advertise it more widely as an all-purpose saddle. My guess is that it’s a Duett Companion Foxhunter, and those are also marketable to eventers (since they’re very similar to the Presto Eventing) and all-purpose saddle shoppers.

If it’s a vet bill situation, keep in mind that the saddle market is VERY slow right now and she may have to price it aggressively to make it move. If it’s a 17.5" or 18" seat with a very wide tree size, that may be a smidge easier since those are hard saddles to find on the market (heck, I have a friend looking for one right now!).

An alternative would be to send it on consignment to a vendor that reps the brand in question, or a vendor that moves a lot of foxhunting tack (like Middleburg Tack).

Thanks all. Sorry - I forgot to come back and check my topic! It is a Duett and I had no idea how to help her market the saddle as I’m unfamiliar with both the brand AND the style as I’m safely secured in my happy H/J world of Pessoas and Butets. I will send her this link and hopefully it gives her some new ideas!
