Selling a wooden tack trunk

I promise I’m not trying to advertise, but mods, please take this down if it is not allowed. I’m moving to a new barn this coming week, and they have a locker system rather than using trunks, so I’m thinking of selling my spare trunk. It has never been to a barn, I’ve always just kept extras in it at my house, but I really don’t have space at home for it and my regular one. I’m thinking of selling it, but have no idea what to ask for it. It’s in perfect condition, but it’s a little on the smaller side. It’s 16" x 30" and then 18" tall, and doesn’t have a tray or anything. So ideas on price? Also, where should I advertise it? Thanks in advance!

Have you googled “tack trunks for sale” or looked on ebay? You will find a ton of listings that you can compare yours against (in terms of size, features, materials) to set a price. For that size and without any trays, there are lots of wooden trunks in the 130-150 range.

A key question for where you should advertise: do you really want to deal with the hassle of packaging and shipping it?

Me? I’d advertise it on my local craigslist in multiple sections. In the farm/garden (i.e. horse) section as a tack trunk, in the crafts section as a crafting trunk, in the household section as a hope chest, etc. Maybe I get $50 less than I would have gotten on equine sites, but to me, cash payment and not having to ship is worth at least that.

Craig’s List and local FB sites (your local H/J and Dressage org sites, for example).

The problem with eBay and English Tack Trader is that you will probably have to ship the tack trunk–so you’re going to have to figure out how much that will cost, and be certain you can package the trunk safely for shipping (or figure out how much it will cost to have it professionally done).

As a buyer (looking off and on for a couple years), I can tell you I figured out a long time ago that it’s not worth buying/shipping used from a private, one-off seller. Too much risk, not enough savings. I’m waiting for the perfect trunk to cross my local ad sites.

Such items sell very quickly on a local to me horse related facebook group I belong to. Look to see if you have such a group and advertise it there.

I would second using FB or Craigslist, Buyer comes to you, so no fussing with shipping issues or costs.

With the size you mentioned, you might want to picture some item beside trunk for size comparison. You will surely have annoying calls asking size! I know EVEN IF you put dimensions in the ad, no one seems to “get it” when reading. Maybe a Fortiflex bucket in front or beside it, or sit saddle on the trunk edge, as an idea. Buyer seeing common size items beside trunk will give viewer a better dimensional idea of size when they look at photos.

Wish I could find a nice tack trunk on Craigslist! Of course I want it real nice, along with being cheap! Ha Ha. Good luck selling.
