I’ve seen many semantic corrections in this forum but generally, stallion and stud used interchangeably go without correction. Has this become part of the vernacular?
Whenever I read the word stud in reference to a stallion, it has a guttural and elongated tone in my head. Then, I can’t help but follow it with “Take me to bed or lose me forever” (Top Gun reference). It’s annoying but may just be my damage.
This is interesting, because I have my own hangups.
Stud to me is the place where stallions are kept.
Having said that, I also feel like I hear it more in western/US breeding. QH stud, ASB stud, etc. I personally use the term stud over stallion only if I’m talking to non horsey people. They might not know a stallion from a gelding, but if I say stud, everyone knows I mean a male that breeds.
IMO, Stallion is the proper term. Stud is where horses are kept for breeding. The term Stud is a very western “thing” right along with “colt” breaker, stud colt and filly colt :lol:
