Is it considered ill-advised to purchase used semen tanks? (as opposed to new ones).
Any other tips would be great too and thank you so much for your help.

What about your power supply? I was advised to think about that in addition to the tank… Given we don’t have a generator and a constant reliably uninterrupted power supply on our farm, I was advised that was an essential consideration to think about, in addition to a tank itself.
Hello! Thanks for your reply, that is something to consider.
What would you need a power source for? We currently have three semen tanks. The semen tanks store liquid nitrogen to keep the frozen semen straws frozen. No power supply needed.
We aren’t talking about a -80 freezer here folks; as Daventry said the N2 tank you need for frozen semen doesn’t require a power source. You do need either a liquid nitrogen supplier who will come to you (a welding supply company or a dairy farmer route) or a way to transport the tank to be refilled. Hold times vary by the tank. I bought a used tank that had been recently scoped by its manufacturer and have been happy with it.
Good to know! I don’t have a tank… Was just advised by someone else not to bother if I would possibly have power outage issues…
Is there a difference if you are talking about short term vs. long term storage?
Um, no. There is no electricity needed with a vapor shipper either. Whomever you were speaking with was pulling your leg.
Good to know. They were justifying their decision in terms of not buying their own tank. I took it at face value… I had been told by others that it may be worthwhile to invest in a tank once you begin considering storing multiple doses of frozen for future use.
So all that is required is an ability to resupply liquid nitrogen routinely?
Thank you everyone for your replies. I saw two used tanks on my local classifieds but giving that some new tanks have a 3 year vacuum warranty I’m not sure what kind of shape these tanks would be in, and it seems like a bit of a risky investment. I’m leaning towards purchasing new.
Thanks for clearing up the incorrect information I got too. It came from a stallion owner who is planning on taking his boy to a large local facility for collection, freezing evaluation and storage. Maybe their logic and the benefits to them of using professional storage is totally different than than a small breeder just looking to store around 10 doses of frozen from VERY specific stallions that you might want to use over the course of a few years?
Its pretty expensive to do long term storage in my area. I was quoted just under $60 per quarter to store 1-7 doses…
