Can canned fish varieties of cat food cause diarrhea in senior kitties? Asking for a friend (yes, truly). Kitty is a 13yo neuter who has had occasional bouts of diarrhea for years. Vet recommended a probiotic last year, which helps. He is fine on chicken, liver, other non-fish canned foods but last week Friskies mackerel gave him diarrhea and last night Friskies salmon.
He eats Friskies and Fancy Feast pâté foods, and Purina dry.
His person asked me to ask y’all for ideas, so TIA for all three of us.
best treatment (home) is canned pumpkin solid pack type not pie filling, has ots of fiber which bulks up the stool and cats usually love it
Sure. Fish based cat food can cause a variety of issues, from heavy metal toxicities to urinary issues. It’s not at all unreasonable to say this cat can’t tolerate fish based foods. I avoid them entirely for my crew.
Thank you both!
Yeah, skip the fish. It clearly disagrees with him. (I have the same issue lol) My cats will only rarely get a fish treat and we stick to chicken, etc and I don’t often get tummy troubles. I would also change off the Fancy Feast - It made one of my cats very sick so I won’t use it.
Also, try some apple pectin to clear up the diarrhea. And the pumpkin for fiber. You can get apple pectin at the health food or vitamin store.
Thank you.
Purrs to your kitties.
